There’s a new moon coming up on this here new year my babies and it’s giving us the dark we need to tend to what may yet be.

When is the new moon in Capricorn?

On January 11 at 6:57 a.m., the first new moon of 2024 will arrive at 20 degrees of Capricorn.

Culturally and collectively, we put a lot of pressure on the idea of New Year’s Day being the point of embarkment; when we set course, pledge resolution, and commit to a better way of being.

In truth, and by the season of winter in which we tread, we’ve got a couple of weeks of fallow fields and internal investigation to move through before we’re truly ready to begin.

Because sometimes we get to have nice things, this week’s new moon in Capricorn is priming us for that very beginning. Bonus if you’ve already faltered on your pledges and resolutions as the new moon in Cap can get you back on track.

Due to (and thank the gods for) the steady, cardinal, earth-bound nature of Capricorn, this new moon is not so much about setting intentions but laying the groundwork, with less writing in stone or blood, and more penciled possibilities.

A new moon transpires when the moon is in conjunction with the sun and is no longer visible from our vantage on Earth. As such, the new moon always falls in the same zodiac sign the sun is currently moving through.

When these two bodies align in sign, it’s an opportunity to assess and progress. This week that opportunity takes shape in the enterprising sign of the sea goat where getting busy and working your way to the top meets pragmatism and a love of luxury and earned earthly delights. Where the grind gives way to gold, if you will.

Never is the moment more primed for taking what could be into being than under the influence of strategy as poetry Capricorn.

The new moon equates to a clean slate, turning over the fresh dirt and blank page of a month-long lunar cycle. The sky goes dark, drawing us in, a summons to cast ourselves against the empty backdrop of pure potential; the moment before creation is conceived. Never is the moment more primed for taking what could be into being than under the influence of strategy as poetry Capricorn.

Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, the great teacher who giveth and taketh away but who does neither without a larger play at hand. Capricorn understands that the worthwhile is worth waiting fo and illustrates in their steady ascent, the uncontestable power of a plan. Under this new moon, that plan can be as simple as acknowledging what you want or what you want to change; give desire the gravity it deserves and let the cardinal forces fall in line to support you.

Capricorn only invests when they’re sure of the payoff. we can all learn a little something from this stance and allot our energies, attention, and proverbial eggs toward what the basket of ultimate benefit. There’s a wonderful clarity that comes from a Saturn-ruled earth sign, the ability to define and discard what is and isn’t for them.

In keeping with the ethos of his sign, double Capricorn and full-time fantasy artist Federico Fellini stressed that creativity, which I apply to both making art and building a life, is a discipline to practice not an aimless pursuit, “I don’t believe in total freedom for the artist. Left on his own, free to do anything he likes, the artist ends up doing nothing at all. If there’s one thing that’s dangerous for an artist, it’s precisely this question of total freedom, waiting for inspiration and all the rest of it.”

This speaks to me of the pragmatism and earth magic of this sign and this moon. There is a kind of anxious stagnation that accompanies endless possibilities; what can we do when we can do anything? The lesson of this moon is to start small and keep going, to forge your form based on how you want to feel in the long run. Dream the dream but remember that we need the container before we can fill it.

The potential for actionable renewal and full-tilt fullness is heightened by the proximity of the sun and moon to Pluto, the planet of transformation, rounding its bases in Capricorn. If ever there was a time to align what you do with what you want, it is nigh.

Capricorn is a stalwart sign but under the dark skies of this new moon, the seagoat is striking a sweet synergy with Uranus, the planet of turning the tables, burning the boats, and wilding the f–k out, urging us towards experimentation. Uranus is retrograding in fellow earth sign Taurus, lending stability to our self-induced chaos.
