Stunning NYC penthouse with wonderful rooftop cottage

At 72 E. First St. in the East Village, a penthouse duplex with a rooftop cottage has entered contract for close to $10 million.

The Cape Cod-style cottage — with glass brick, natural light and a writing desk — has long been an urban anomaly, looking like a structure that seems more at home in coastal Massachusetts.

In warmer weather, the roof-level entertaining space grows lush.

The charming cottage, despite its city location, provides a sense of escape. This urban oasis was created by the late sculptor Henry Merwin Shrady, who  renovated the home and added the rooftop retreat, which became the stuff of local legend in the downtown enclave.

This 900-year-old English castle seeks a new generation of owners — for $11.87M
