‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ (2022)
This multiverse-hopping, deeply personal movie won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (Michelle Yeoh), Best Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan), Best Supporting Actress (Jamie Lee Curtis), Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing. Evelyn Wang (Yeoh), a struggling Chinese immigrant, runs a laundromat with her husband Waymond (Quan) but is constantly fixated on all the other lives she feels she could have had.
When a version of her husband from an alternate reality appears and explains that it’s up to her to save the multiverse from an evil entity (Stephanie Hsu, who also plays her daughter), Evelyn is taken on a complex journey that forces her to value the life she has, rather than the one she thinks she wanted. Thanks to its thrilling action sequences, hilariously surreal dimensions and stellar performances, you’ll be glad you live in the same reality as this movie.
‘Good Hair’ (2009)
Chris Rock narrates and stars in this comedic documentary about the culture and industry around Black hair. The movie is both riotously funny and profoundly sad in the way it exposes the financial hardship that the pressure to conform to white beauty standards often creates for both Black women and men. Celebrities like Raven-Symoné, Maya Angelou and Ice-T appear in this fast-paced, entertaining movie to share their thoughts on how hair has impacted their lives.
Rock is charming and self-aware in the documentary, which examines every element of the $9 billion industry, from barbershops and salons to the factories in which hair products are made.
‘Deadpool’ (2016)
Ryan Reynolds’ take on Marvel’s beloved “Merc with a Mouth” debuted in this hilarious movie, leading to a franchise that would culminate in the record-breaking 2024 box office smash Deadpool and Wolverine. This fourth-wall-breaking film isn’t just a parody of superhero movies, it’s a love letter to them.
When Wade Wilson (Reynolds) is diagnosed with cancer shortly after meeting the love of his life, Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), he undergoes an experimental treatment that leaves him hideously disfigured, but also gives him a healing factor that makes him almost impossible to kill. With the reluctant help of X-Men Colossus (Stefan Kapičić) and Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand), Wade steps into his anti-hero identity with filthy jokes, virtuosic violence and a charming vulnerability that will make you root for him — even though, by all accounts, he’s an a******.
