‘The Handmaiden’ (2016)

An intense, intrigue-filled erotic thriller, The Handmaiden is based on a 2002 novel called Fingersmith, which takes place in Victorian England but is reimagined here in Japanese-ruled Korea. It follows Sook-hee (Kim Tae-ri), an orphaned pickpocket who takes part in a plan orchestrated by Count Fujiwara (Ha Jung-woo) to help him marry a wealthy heiress and steal her inheritance.

Sook-hee takes a job as a handmaiden in the home of the heiress, Izumi Hideko (Kim Min-hee) — but the two women form a deeper bond than Sook-hee could ever have expected. Full of shocking twists and double-crosses, The Handmaiden is an electrifying movie that will leave you on the edge of your seat.

‘Warm Bodies’ (2013)

If you’re looking for a lighter take on the zombie genre, check out Warm Bodies. It follows R (Nicholas Hoult), a zombie who yearns to feel connected to his dead humanity. In this world, zombies experience the feelings and memories of the brains they eat — so when R eats Julie’s (Teresa Palmer) boyfriend’s brain, he ends up falling in love with her.

Much to Julie’s surprise, she falls for him too — and their connection might have the power to change everything. A creative take on zombie lore that’s sweet and surprising, Warm Bodies is an underrated fave among the Watch With Us team.
