When your HVAC starts acting up, it’s tempting to see what you can fix yourself before calling a professional.
Sometimes, you’re right, and all you need to do is fix a filter issue or reset the thermostat. But not every issue is an easy fix. Some problems are not DIY-friendly. Anything involving electrical repairs, refrigerant, drainage or gas can be a safety risk and you might make the issue worse.
That is especially true when your system is already struggling in extreme weather. “If a customer is calling with a need and they’re in distress because their system is broken — and let’s say that it’s 105 degrees outside — they need somebody there right now,” says Josh Conder, division operations manager for American Residential Services (ARS) Central Division. “We can’t say, ‘All right, we’ll get out there next week. Just sweat for the next week.’ That doesn’t work well.”
But your best bet is still to wait for the right kind of help when the issue is beyond a basic fix. So how do you know what to check yourself and what to leave alone?
Here are seven HVAC repairs and fixes you can usually do yourself — and five you should never try without a professional.
Replace a dirty filter
This is one of the easiest issues to fix. If you have restricted airflow or feel like the air is not cooling enough, the first thing you want to check is the filter.
If the filter looks dirty, clogged or gray with dust, replace it with the correct size and type for your system — and make sure it is installed in the right direction.
Joey Dooley, a general manager at ARS in Texas, says newer systems can even help homeowners know when a filter is actually dirty.
“There are even systems now that can help tell you if a filter is actually dirty versus replacing it just because it’s ‘time,’” he says. “If you’re buying expensive filters, replacing them when you don’t need to is unnecessary.”
That said, if changing the filter does not improve airflow or the system is still freezing, overheating or shutting down, call a technician.
Check the thermostat settings
Start by checking that the thermostat is set to the right mode, ensuring that the fan, temperature and heat/cool setting are set to what you want.
In the summer, always set the temperature below the room temperature. If you have a thermostat that uses batteries, start by replacing them.
If the thermostat is blank, unresponsive or reading the wrong temperature, it may be part of the problem.
You can handle basic thermostat checks yourself. But if the thermostat is hardwired, misreading temperatures or not communicating with the system, that may require a technician.
Open or unblock vents
Blocked vents can make rooms feel too hot or too cold.
If you have a larger home or office, you’ll have vents around the space. Check to see if they’re all working, and also check if anything is blocked by furniture, rugs or storage. Even a partially covered vent can be a problem.
This is an easy DIY fix, but if one room still has weak airflow after the vents are open, the issue may be ductwork.
Clear debris around the outdoor unit
My HVAC faces outdoors onto my balcony. If you have a similar situation, or an HVAC that faces out onto an outdoor area, make sure the space around the unit is clear.
Check to see if branches, leaves or other debris are around the unit or on the unit. It’s also important to keep surrounding plants trimmed, so they’re not blocking the unit. Important note: Do not open the unit, remove panels or spray electrical components. This DIY step is about clearing the area around the unit, not repairing the equipment inside it.
Reset a tripped breaker once
If the HVAC suddenly turns off, you can check the breaker panel. Sometimes a tripped breaker can lead to an HVAC not running.
You can reset the breaker once, but if it trips again, stop. Do not keep flipping it back on, as that can signal an electrical issue.
Clean a visible clogged drain line warning area
Since AC systems remove moisture from air, they have to drain somewhere. If there is water near the unit or if your AC is dripping, drainage may be part of the issue.
“I think sometimes people don’t realize how much water an AC system produces, and how quickly that can become a problem,” says Dooley. “Those systems can generate a lot of water, especially in the summertime, and if drainage fails you can get serious damage.”
You can check for visible water around the indoor unit and make sure nothing obvious is blocking the drain area.
Gently clean a dirty vent cover or return grille
Dust buildup on vent covers or grilles can make airflow worse, especially if it’s coated with pet hair or lint.
You’ll notice a dirty dust cover almost instantly, and if it is easy to access, take the opportunity to wipe it down with a damp cloth or vacuum it with a brush attachment.
Always make sure the system is off before cleaning, and don’t push anything deep into the vents. If airflow is still weak, then there may be a problem inside the ducts or the system itself, so it is time to call a technician.

While these are issues or things to look out for, there are some you should not try, especially if it involves electricity or handling internal components. This is when you need a licensed professional.
Do not replace a capacitor yourself
A capacitor is an electrical component, and while it’s a common problem in HVAC, it’s not one you can fix yourself. In fact, they can be dangerous to replace yourself.
Essentially, if your system is buzzing, clicking, struggling to start or turning off quickly, shut it down and call a technician.
Do not handle refrigerant
Refrigerant is not something homeowners should refill, release or diagnose on their own.
If your AC is not cooling or maybe it’s freezing up or leaking refrigerant, call a professional. Refrigerant requires the right tools and handling and adding refrigerant without fixing the underlying issue won’t solve the problem.
This is especially important as refrigerant rules change. According to ARS/Rescue Rooter, a national residential HVAC and home services company, the refrigerant transition that began in 2025 is expected to push repair and replacement costs on older R-410A systems higher over the next several years as supply tightens.
If your system uses older refrigerant and needs repeated refrigerant-related repairs, ask whether repair or replacement makes more sense.
Do not handle electrical parts or wiring
You might have a toolkit at home, but that doesn’t make you a technician.
If your system is tripping breakers, making buzzing sounds or repeatedly tripping, do not open the unit and start working on wiring yourself.
Electrical HVAC problems can be dangerous and can also damage expensive equipment if handled incorrectly.
You can check the breaker once. After that, repeated trips, sparks, burning smells or electrical sounds need a professional.
Do not repair gas furnace components yourself
If your heating system involves gas, do not do any DIY repairs on the fuel lines or ignition systems.
Gas issues can create fire, carbon monoxide or explosion risks. If you smell gas, leave the home and immediately call for emergency help from a safe location.
Even if the issue seems minor, gas furnace repairs should be handled by a trained technician.
Do not replace major HVAC parts or resize the system yourself
Most HVAC repairs are more than just swapping parts. This includes system sizing, airflow, ductwork, drainage, refrigerant and even electrical requirements.
Gregory Milich, an HVAC expert and college instructor with 43 years of experience, says sizing matters.
“First of all, it needs to be sized properly,” he says. “You can’t just take a three-ton system out and put a four-ton system in because the customer says, ‘I just want more air conditioning.’ It does not work that way.”
Conder says his team performs a full energy analysis and heat-load calculation to determine what works best for each home. This helps determine the right unit for the home, taking sizing into consideration.
In other words, replacing or resizing an HVAC system is not a DIY project.
When a repair may turn into a replacement
Sometimes a DIY check is enough. Other times, a professional repair is enough, but if the system is old, it might make more sense to replace it.
ARS recommends a general rule for homeowners: If a repair quote is more than half the cost of a new system and the unit is over 10 years old, replacement usually makes more financial sense over the life of the system.
Dooley says age alone is not the only factor.
“In some cases, an eight- or nine-year-old system makes sense to replace,” he says. “In other cases, you may have a system that’s 15 years old that still makes sense to keep. We really want to do that analysis and let the homeowner know what the true cost of ownership has been so they can make a decision.”
That decision should be based on repair cost, system age, comfort, efficiency, warranty coverage and how often the system breaks down.
How much could replacement cost?
If your system does need to be replaced, the cost can be significant.
According to ARS, a complete residential HVAC system replacement typically ranges from about $12,000 to $16,000, depending on system type, home size and installation requirements. ARS notes that simpler furnace-only replacements run lower, while premium or high-efficiency systems and complex installs run higher.
A central AC split-system replacement typically ranges from about $13,000 to $16,000, with cost driven by system size, efficiency and install complexity.
And finally, ARS reports that a combined gas furnace and AC system typically runs between about $13,000 and $16,000, depending on equipment and home requirements.
That is why it is worth doing the safe DIY checks first — and calling a professional before a small issue turns into a bigger one.
