Miley Cyrus is only six years older than her boyfriend, Maxx Morando, but the two grew up in different eras.
Cyrus, who will turn 32 on November 23, grew up with a desktop computer that she shared with her brothers and sisters — similar to how many millennials experienced the late 1990s and early aughts. Morando, 26, grew up with a laptop, and serves as Cyrus’ Gen Z interpreter, according to her Harper’s Bazaar cover story published Wednesday, November 20.
“He looks at life really differently than I do,” she said. “Honestly, he’s raised our dog off Reddit. I’m like, ‘Are you sure we’re supposed to be doing this?’ And he’s like, ‘On Reddit it says blah, blah, blah.’”
Despite the generational divide, they see music as a common ground. Morando, a producer and drummer for the band Liily , introduced her to “the coolest kid in Brooklyn’s music,” while together they still listen to so-called “cringe” music like Train’s “Drops of Jupiter.”
“He’s very similar to me. We just don’t take life too seriously,” she added.
It means the pair can collaborate on their own music. Morando even helped Cyrus write “Something Beautiful,” the title track of her next album, slated for a 2025 release.
“I worked with my dad forever. That’s how me and my ex-husband met each other,” she said, referring to The Last Song costar Liam Hemsworth. “I’ve always worked with the people that I love. And Maxx just inspires me so much.”
Seeing Morando and other singers coming up behind her, Cyrus is thankful to have broken through in the industry before the age of social media and omnipresent smartphones.
“It’s probably really hard coming into this business with phones and Instagram. That wasn’t always a part of my life, and I’m not a part of it now. I don’t even have my Instagram password.”
Cyrus and Morando were first linked in 2022 when they were seen dancing together at Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party special. A source told Us Weekly exclusively in September that the pair is “more in love than ever.”
“Miley is fully content with where her life is,” the source says. “She’s in love with Maxx and feels so fulfilled with her family and career.”
They moved in together earlier in 2024, sharing one of Cyrus’ several properties, this one being “a huge mansion overlooking the water in a gated community in Malibu.” The source says the two are loving life together and “have grown even closer.”
