A suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson last week was detained on Monday in Altoona, Pennsylvania. The person of interest has been identified as 26-year-old Luigi Mangione. 

UnitedHealth Group, parent company of UnitedHealthcare the insurance arm, told FOX Business:

“Our hope is that today’s apprehension brings some relief to Brian’s family, friends, colleagues and the many others affected by this unspeakable tragedy.

“We thank law enforcement and will continue to work with them on this investigation. 

“We ask that everyone respect the family’s privacy as they mourn.”

A worker at the McDonald’s reportedly recognized Mangione and called the local authorities. According to Mangione’s LinkedIn page, he is employed at TrueCar Inc. and attended the University of Pennsylvania.

On Dec. 4, the 50-year-old Thompson was heading into the company’s annual investor day in New York City when he was gunned down outside the New York Hilton around 6:44 am ET. He was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The NYPD led the investigation and confirmed Friday that they believed the suspect had left Manhattan. The FBI then joined the manhunt, releasing fresh photos of the person of interest throughout the weekend.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams said at a press conference Monday, “He matches the description of the identification we’ve been looking for” and that he is “in possession of several items that we believe will connect him to this incident.”  

NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny, also at the briefing, did not disclose an official motive but said, “It does seem that he has some, some ill will toward corporate America”

Shares of UnitedHealth Group fell nearly 10% last week but rebounded on Monday.
