Australian comedian Will Gibb has sparked a heated debate among Aussies after sharing a “rude” experience at a takeout restaurant.
In a clip posted to social media, Gibb revealed he had walked into the food joint wearing headphones before taking them out to place an order at the counter.
After exchanging greetings and ordering his food, the 26-year-old stood to the side and put his headphones back in.
“I’ve got my earphones in and I’m watching this person make my food. I could tell he was bagging it so I went on my phone to have one last look,” he said.
“Then I’m looking around and thinking maybe it wasn’t my food. So, I look over and the guy is standing at the counter looking at me,
“I made eye contact with him and took my earphones out and he said ‘Yep, I’m not going to bother calling [your name] if you’ve got your earphones in.’
“I was completely dumbfounded,” he added.
The clip, which has been viewed over 182,000 times, left commenters divided.
“Fully on side with the server. What a legend,” said one viewer.
“Im with the server. I find it rude to constantly have earphones in,” said another.
“As soon as you go into a place, especially when ordering something, headphones out and they don’t go back on until you’re finished. Server is spot on,” added a third.
”I’m with the server here. You’re in the wrong. No sympathy,” said a fourth.
However, others were quick to jump to the defense of the young Aussie.
“People on the side of the server need to chill out,” said one.
“I don’t think that’s fair, you were literally paying attention? I’ve worked in hospitality for YEARS, and I would rather call it out and leave it to get cold than bother teaching someone some kind of lesson,” said another.
“I can’t believe people are against Will, this is so ridiculous just chuck a wave or a thumbs up when it’s ready,” suggested a third.
Some even suggested that it was discriminatory to force people to take their earphones out.
“I wear headphones when I go shopping because everything is so overstimulating and I don’t want to be bothered,” said one
“As an anxious girl I cannot go out in public without my headphones in or I will cry,” said another.
“I wear earphones for sensory issues most times,” echoed a third.
