Maggie and Cal have weathered many ups and downs on Sullivan’s Crossing, but they’re about to face their biggest challenge yet after that surprise husband reveal.

Based on the novel series by Robyn Carr, Sullivan’s Crossing follows neurosurgeon Maggie (Morgan Kohan) as she finds herself in legal trouble and returns to her hometown in rural Nova Scotia to reconnect with her estranged father, Sully (Scott Patterson).

The move allows Maggie to have a meet-cute with Sully’s neighbor — and her eventual love interest — Cal (Chad Michael Murray). Despite having instant chemistry, Maggie and Cal weather some major obstacles, including a love triangle and a pregnancy, before timing finally works in their favor.

As season 3, which aired in 2025, came to an end, Cal and Maggie were preparing for the next step in their relationship. Things took a turn, however, when Maggie’s previously mentioned “summer fling” Liam (Marcus Rosner) showed up — and referred to himself as her husband.

“I remember hearing a little bit [about Liam early in season 3]. I didn’t know they were married,” Kohan, 31, told Swooon in July 2025. “There started to be talk when we filmed the scene with Lola and having summer flings. I knew that he was going to be coming into it, but I didn’t really know when or in what capacity. That cliffhanger was so much fun for me to read as well.”

Kohan acknowledged that Maggie’s concerns about getting serious with Cal could have come from her past with Liam.

“I feel like it came up so last-minute that I didn’t really have time to think about it, but I think it definitely would. It makes a lot more sense, for sure, for her to be more hesitant,” she continued. “At the same time, I still don’t know the history, so who knows when we get to find out a bit more of that information, what he really means that he’s her husband and all that kind of stuff.”

Kohan concluded: “I mean, there’s gonna have to be a few conversations had [between Maggie and Cal]. It’s going to be a trust thing to have to build up again, because that is a pretty big thing to leave out.”

Miscommunication and meddling from people like Andrew and Lola (Amalia Williamson) kept Maggie and Cal from properly addressing their feelings for each other.

Maggie and Andrew rekindled their romance amid her pregnancy, but most of the season still teased her complicated connection with Cal. After Lola intercepted the letter Cal left for Maggie before he left Sullivan’s Crossing, he explained to Maggie that he disappeared to properly say goodbye to his late wife before committing to a possible future with her.

Before season 2 wrapped up, Maggie and Cal decided to give their relationship a chance despite her still being pregnant with Andrew’s baby.

The third season quickly confirmed that the explosion at the restaurant caused Maggie to have a miscarriage. She was still in a relationship with Cal, but they had a few hiccups as Maggie healed from her pregnancy loss. The couple finally had sex for the first time, which deepened their connection right before Cal needed Maggie’s support to reconnect with his estranged father.

Everything was going smoothly until Cal asked Maggie to move in with him. Maggie didn’t want to rush their relationship, which made Cal think she didn’t want a future with him. They worked that out and seemed to be on the right track in the season 3 finale. The last scene of the season questioned where Cal and Maggie are headed next after her summer fling appeared at Sullivan’s Crossing — and called himself her husband.
