NFL legend Robert Griffin III revealed he and his family were lucky to be alive after getting into a major car accident.
“Just got in the worst car accident of our lives with my wife and kids in Fort Worth, Texas,” Griffin, 35, revealed via X on Friday, October 3. “Scary crash, ricocheted off the highway divider multiple times, blown both front tires. Thankful to God that my wife and kids are safe.”
The former Washington Redskins quarterback shared photos of his smashed Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and another severely damaged vehicle on the roadside.
A spokesperson for the Fort Worth Police Department confirmed to TMZ on Friday that the collision took place at around 11:48 a.m. CT and turned into a four-car wreck.
“Upon arrival, officers located three of the vehicles that were involved; the other had left the scene prior to officers’ arrival,” a police spokesperson told the outlet. “Medical personnel made the scene and transported an occupant to a nearby hospital with unknown injuries.”
The law enforcement official added, “This accident is being investigated.”
Robert’s wife, Grete Griffin, offered more details on the wreck, revealing that she’d gone with the couple’s three daughters — Gloria, 7, Gameya, 6, and Gia, 6 — to meet up with the Fox Sports broadcaster in Ft. Worth ahead of the TCU vs. Colorado college football game on Saturday, October 4. (Robert — who also has a 10-year-old daughter, Reese, from a prior relationship — joined Fox Sports as a college football analyst in September.)
“Well, we didn’t make it to Ft. Worth,” Grete, 32, wrote via her Instagram Story on Friday. “[We] got into the worst accident of our lives but thankfully our kids are safe and OK. That’s all that matters.”
She went on, “Robert and I are a little banged up but nothing a little love won’t fix.”
Grete also confirmed that “everyone” in the car that collided with her family’s Mercedes-Benz Sprinter was “alive and well” too.

“It ended up being a four-car crash,” she later updated fans via Instagram. “A woman in one of the cars was 22 weeks pregnant and she was taken to the hospital so please send prayers her way.”
The Griffins later decided to get checked out by local paramedics as a precaution due to a few lingering medical concerns.
“Got everyone checked out in the ambulance and kiddos are well and healthy,” she assured her followers. “I hit my head so I will get a CT scan and Robert’s back is also getting checked out.”
The shocking crash occurred just over three weeks after Fox Sports announced that RGIII had joined its college football broadcasting team for the 2024-25 season. The Heisman Trophy winner has been paired with play-by-play announcer Jason Benetti and sideline reporter Alexa Landestoy.
“This opportunity with FOX Sports represents the perfect intersection of my two greatest passions — football and storytelling,” Griffin said in a statement on September 11. “I’m honored to join the FOX Sports family and excited to celebrate the game of football while working with some of the best people in the business telling the stories that matter.”
He continued, “My goal is to bring that authentic perspective to every broadcast, helping fans understand not just what’s happening on the field, but why it matters and what it means to the young men chasing their dreams. Teaming up with Jason Benetti, whom I greatly respect, and working alongside Alexa Landestoy will be special.”
The outspoken athlete was previously a part of ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown on-air team until August 2024, when he was let go by the network alongside Samantha Ponder, as part of a cost-cutting measure.
