There’s a new moon rising in the sign of secrets and shadows folk, and in this depth of dark, there’s nowhere to hide.

When is the new moon?

The new moon in Scorpio peaks on November 20, 2025, at 1:47 a.m. Eastern Time at 28°11 Scorpio.

New moon phase

A new moon occurs when the moon is in conjunction with the sun — and thus is no longer visible from our earthly vantage. As such, the new moon always falls in the same zodiac sign that the sun is moving through.

The new moon is a clean slate, turning over the fresh dirt of a month-long lunar cycle. The sky goes dark, and we go deep, especially under the influence of Scorpio.

Every new moon initiates a cycle that peaks six months later when the moon is full in the same sign.

In astrology, the sun symbolizes the ego, the essential self, and our forward trajectory — while the moon represents our primal nature, need for nourishment, and subconscious urges. When these two bodies align in sign, it’s an opportunity to assess and progress.

This week, that opportunity takes shape in the fixed waters of death-centric, obsession-prone Scorpio.

Scorpio is ruled by Mars, the planet of vitality, and Pluto, the luminary of death.

It is through the reconciliation of these extremes that Scorpio finds its ultimate power.

To add to the mix, mayhem and mystery, Mercury retrograde slinked into Scorpio on November 18 and will be conjunct the sun and moon during the new moon.

“This lunation creates a powerful connection between the Sun, Moon, and Mercury RX in Scorpio that will leave lasting mental impressions we won’t fully understand until next spring,” Rachel Ruth Tate, certified astrologer at Casinos Analyzer, told The Post.

“Combined with a powerful opposition to Uranus retrograde in Taurus, this lunation sparks inevitable catharsis and reanimation.”

Scorpio lords over the eighth house of sex, endings, and resources — that condominium of the unconscious where things are felt but not seen.

The new moon in Scorpio insists that you dig deeper, to see in and through the dark — and step closer to the kind of honesty and intimacy that terrifies you the most.

A trustfall into the abyss, if you will

A scant few hours after the new moon in Scorpio peaks, we will bear witness to a Mercury retrograde Cazimi in Scorpio, which amounts to nothing short of ritual purification by the light of the ever-loving sun.

“Each Mercury cazimi is a mental cleanse, and a retrograde one deals with the past and its processing. In Scorpio, and with both luminaries present, this is about what we can sense in the darkness – the shadow side we all possess,” said Tate.

She warned that the denial of this shadow is a disavowal of the self.

To better understand the dark side, it’s helpful to define it. In essence, our shadows represent everything we’ve exiled — all the nasty bits, shameful urges, overwhelming emotions, intense experiences, and terrifying truths we have attempted to suppress and/or separate ourselves from

“There is much to explore in the files we keep hidden away for a time when we are ready to revisit the painful and traumatic records we have stored there. If you’re reading this and thinking, ‘this isn’t me,’ then take heed, this New Moon in Scorpio is especially coming for you.”

She notes that being able to name the wound, or the demon, allows us to call out and cauterize.

“We might discover a wound we are not ready to dress just yet, or we may want to address it differently than we have in the past, and that’s okay… this Mercury RX New Moon in Scorpio assures us that when we recognize a problem and put language to it, that action is half the solution.”

While we’ll all be under the influence and emo undertow of this new moon, Tate says three zodiac signs will feel its effects most acutely.

When’s the next new moon?

The next new moon, and the last one of 2025, is the new moon in Sagittarius on December 19.

“Good thing you were built brave and made so resilient, Scorpio, because the moon falls in your sign, making this new moon a somewhat painful internal moment,” said Tate.

She notes that the Mercury cazimi coming in the wake of this new moon could feel like a long-awaited breakthrough or a particularly taxing therapy session.

“You have no choice but to ride this wave of sensation out, and if anyone can handle a face-off with their demons, it’s you. Letting go is especially difficult for Scorpios, but you all know that too much bitterness makes a poor brew, and revenge is just the path of least resistance when dealing with negativity.”

Tate warns that the new moon in Scorpio could be awkward for team Gemini, asking them to trade levity for depth, off the cuff for on their knees.

“It’s easier for you to be silly or deflect with clever quips than it is for you to take emotional accountability. This is a serious opportunity for depth psychology and its rewarding fruits, IF you’re willing to do the personal labor that sort of therapy requires,” said Tate.

She notes that Geminis don’t need a therapist to take advantage of these subterranean currents; they can access them through automatic writing, speaking or simply journaling.

As Virgo is a Mercury-ruled sign, the planet’s retrograde is particularly acute for those born under these stars.

“Be aware that while processing data may be one of your gifts, this flood of emotional data will be a whole lot to process,” said Tate.

She recommends clearing your schedule for the next few days to allow your body and mind to acclimate to the tidal feelings pulling at your heart meat and reaching out to a trusted friend to workshop your shadows.

“This could look like inner child work or just talking through the shitty parts of your upbringing.  Most of us are babies having babies, so perhaps true forgiveness of yourself and others is the cheat code, if you can manage to mentally key it in.”
