The Secrets We Bury will give an intimate look into the Carroll family’s investigation following the disappearance of George.
When George walked out on his wife, Dorothy Carroll, and their four children in the 1960s, he left the siblings haunted by what could have happened to their father.
George’s son Mike Carroll stars in the documentary as cameras watch him set out to unravel the mystery of his father’s disappearance. In the process, he uncovers a darker story than he or anyone else in his family could have ever imagined.
The documentary includes extensive sit-down interviews with the Carroll siblings, as well as intimate archival footage of the family that spans several decades of their lives.
The Secrets We Bury promises to tell a story that includes equal parts mystery and family drama. Additionally, the documentary raises important questions about which narratives we choose to believe and why.
“The Secrets We Bury is an intimate exploration of memory, family, and the lasting impact of generational trauma. By bravely sharing their story, the Carroll family reveals how the past, no matter how deeply buried, always has a way of resurfacing,” Jason Sarlanis, President of Investigation Discovery, said in a statement.

What Happens in the ‘Secrets We Bury’ Trailer?
A first look trailer for The Secrets We Bury shows Mike recalling a neighbor walking up to his front door and handing his mother a box of his father’s belongings. While Mike did not get to hear the conversation between the neighbor and his mother, he said that there was apparent “anger” between them.
After Mike asked why the man had George’s things, Dorthy revealed that their neighbor was actually married to George’s mom.
Once Mike learned that his grandma was his neighbor for years and was even on his newspaper route, he admitted to questioning other things about his family. “I collected from that house for years and my grandmother was there? And she never said hello?” Mike asked in the trailer, adding that he also wondered why his late mother never told him that his grandmother lived so close to them.

When Does ‘The Secrets We Bury’ Premiere?
The Secrets We Bury will premiere on Tuesday, December 16, at 9 pm ET on the ID Channel. The documentary will later be available to stream on HBO Max.
