Although one typically assumes they’ll become a grandparent later in life, some lucky few get the rare chance to be young grandmas and grandpas — celebrities included.
Stars like Whoopi Goldberg, Jim Carrey and Mick Jagger all became grandparents before the age of 55. In August 2025, former Bachelorette Emily Maynard learned she would earn the title of grandma at the age of 39 thanks to her oldest daughter, Ricki, then 20.
Goldberg’s daughter, Alexandrea Martin Dean, was just 16 when she got pregnant. “It would not have been what I would have chosen for her, but at the same time, I thought, ‘What a great thing that she’s confident enough in me to tell me,’” Goldberg told the Los Angeles Times in 1989.
Goldberg’s granddaughter Amara Skye Dean was born on November 13, 1989 — which also happened to be her grandma’s birthday. (Alexandrea also shares two children with her now-ex-husband, Bernard Dean.)
