Chad Lowe and his brother, Rob Lowe, are synonymous with Hollywood.
While Rob, 62, was part of Hollywood’s infamous “Brat Pack” in the 1980s, Chad, 58, forged an acting career in his own right. In 1993, he won the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series at the Emmys for his role in the ABC drama Life Goes On.
Since then, Chad has followed up with roles on ER, Melrose Place, 24 and most notably, Pretty Little Liars.
Away from the screen, Chad is married to producer Kim Painter — with whom he shares three daughters — and was previously wed to two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank.
In September 2026, Chad and wife Kim announced the tragic death of their second daughter, Fiona, at age 13. The couple described Fiona as “a loving young girl who was smart, creative, and loved to dance.”

Rob Lowe
Chad is the younger brother of actor Rob, whose iconic roles include the 1985 film St. Elmo’s Fire and TV shows The West Wing and 9-1-1: Lone Star.
The siblings also have two half-brothers from their parents’ respective second marriages.
Rob shares two sons with his wife Sheryl Berkoff: Matthew, 33, and John, 30.

In January 2025, Rob revealed how he was supporting Chad and his family after they lost their home in the L.A. wildfires.
“My brother Chad, unfortunately, lost his home [and] everything in it. Entire neighborhood [is] gone. He has three little girls and all their friends [also] lost everything,” he said at the time.
Rob said he was providing Chad “a lot of big brother hand-me-downs,” quipping, “He’s back to being 15 again. He loves to dress like a dad [and] I give him a lot of crap. So, I took my most dad Hokas [shoes and passed them on].”
Kim Painter
Chad wed film producer and casting director Kim in Los Angeles in August 2010, with their daughter, Mabel, then 15 months old, serving as ringbearer.
The couple were first linked in January 2007, following Chad’s split from Hilary Swank.
According to Chad’s Instagram, Kim is an avid surfer.
“My wife is many wonderful things: loving, caring, nurturing, adventurous, brave and beautiful! Just to name a few. She also happens to be a rad surfer mom and winner of the @kswaveco ‘wave of the day’ trophy!!” he wrote in a May tribute for her birthday. “Oh, and she’s a year older today!! Happy birthday @kimlowe!! Love you so much!!”
Hilary Swank
Chad met his Oscar-winning first wife while filming the 1997 movie Quiet Days in Hollywood. The couple married in September 1997.
In 2000, Hilary, 52, famously left her then-husband out of her acceptance speech when she won the Best Actress Oscar for her role in Boys Don’t Cry. Thankfully, Hilary got a do-over five years later, when she won the award again for Million Dollar Baby at the 2005 Oscars. That time, Chad was the first person she thanked.
“I’m going to start by thanking my husband, because I like to think I learn from past mistakes,” she said. “Chad, you’re my everything. Thank you for your support. It means the world.”

Chad and Kim welcomed their first daughter, Mabel, now 17, in May 2009.
“Everybody is healthy and happy,” his representative said at the time.
Mabel was part of her parents’ wedding in August 2010.
In May, Chad marked Mabel’s 17th birthday with a sweet Instagram tribute. “Please join me in wishing this beautiful soul a most happy 17th birthday!!” he wrote. “I love you soooo much @mabellowe_ !! I’m so proud to be your Dadda❤️.”

Kim gave birth to the couple’s second child, daughter Fiona, in November 2012.
“It’s a girl!!! And she’s as beautiful as her mommy (@ikimlowe) & big sister Mabel!! We are blessed!” Chad shared via X at the time. “My wife @ikimlowe & I want to thank everyone again for the kind words of congratulations on the birth of our daughter Fiona Hepler Lowe!”
Fiona’s middle name, Hepler, is the maiden name of Rob and Chad’s late mom, Barbara Lynn Wilson, who died in 2003.
“Celebrating Fiona officially becoming a teen today!! Keep dancing through life FiBear! Love you soooo much!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️,” Chad said in a post celebrating Fiona’s 13th birthday last November.
In September 2026, Chad and Kim announced the tragic news that Fiona had died at age 13.
“We are deeply heartbroken by the loss of our beloved Fiona,” the couple said in a statement.
“She was adored by her sisters and she was deeply loved by her parents. In fact, she was the light of our lives,” they said. “Her passing is devastating for our entire family and we ask for prayers and privacy at this time,” the statement said. “If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, please reach out to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988.”

Nixie Lowe
Nixie, 10, is Chad and Kim’s youngest daughter, born in March 2016.
“She came a little early, but she’s small and mighty. All is well,” Chad told People at the time.
Nixie’s name references water spirits from Germanic folklore.
Chad said the name “seemed like a good fit because we’re both avid surfers — my wife more so than me — and are involved in the Waterkeeper Alliance.”
Nixie’s middle name, Barbara, is also a tribute to Chad’s mom.
