Chicago O’Hare International Airport had a bit of a security scare over the weekend — but it turned out it was just a food delivery.
A DoorDash driver was en route to his destination when he “accidentally drove into an unauthorized secured area within O’Hare Airport,” CBS News reported.
Despite the strict rules at the Chicago airport pickup and drop-off areas, the delivery person entered the secured areas before a worker realized he wasn’t supposed to be there.
According to the outlet, a source noted that the driver drove miles along the interior and restricted roads at the airport and possibly even crossed runways — before someone in the air traffic control tower saw him.
Business jet pilot and former air traffic controller Robert Mark told CBS that incidents like this are a major safety concern for the airport — but they don’t happen often.
“Luckily, not very often — but I have seen it, at other airports, and it’s frightening when you’re up, and then you go, ‘Who the heck is that?’” Mark explained.
The Chicago police confirmed that the accidental trespasser was a 36-year-old man working as a delivery driver, and after conducting a preliminary investigation, they believe the actions were simply a mistake.
No charges or citations were filed against the DoorDash driver.
However, the situation had the potential to be much worse.
“Imagine if this had been at night in the darkness, I mean, where no one noticed this person,” Mark said. “Headlights all look the same, pretty much in the dark. This could have been really, really bad.”
Meanwhile, it’s unknown whether the person who ordered DoorDash ended up getting their grub.
