A former Detroit, Michigan, nurse accused of sexually assaulting more than two dozen women is facing new criminal charges in connection with the sex assaults of five more patients, according to prosecutors.
Wilfredo Figueroa-Berrios, 47, of Wayne, is criminally charged in relation to the sexual assaults of eight women in total, including seven women who were his patients, according to a news release shared by the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office on Wednesday, January 21.
Figueroa-Berrios, who used to work as nurse at Detroit Medical Center Sinai Grace Hospital, has been repeatedly sued, according to The Detroit News, which reports at least 26 women have brought sexual assault allegations against him to date.
The latest criminal charges against Figueroa-Berrios stem from sexual assaults between December 2021 to August 2025, according to the prosecutor’s office.
“A doctor’s office, or an exam room, or any kind (of) hospital setting should be the ultimate safe space for anyone seeking medical care,” Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said in a statement.
“The allegations in this case are disturbing and should in no way reflect poorly on our many hardworking, caring health care professionals,” Worthy added.
Us Weekly attempted to reach Figueroa-Berrios’ defense attorney for comment on January 21 and was awaiting a response.
One of the latest criminal cases involving Figueroa-Berrios dates back to December 23, 2021, when he was working at the Community Outreach for Psychiatric Emergencies in Livonia. There, he was accused of sexually assaulting a 34-year-old patient, the prosecutor’s office said.
The other new sexual assault cases detailed by the office involve allegations that Figueroa-Berrios assaulted four female patients at Detroit Medical Center Sinai Grace Hospital.
This includes on December 18, 2024, when Figueroa-Berrios sexually assaulted a 22-year-old woman “when she was admitted as a patient,” according to prosecutors.
Within a year, in July 2025, Figueroa-Berrios sexually assaulted a 35-year-old woman and a 24-year-old woman during two separate incidents, the prosecutor’s office said.
About a month later, on August 24, 2025, Figueroa-Berrios sexually assaulted a 26-year-old woman at Detroit Medical Center Sinai Grace Hospital, according to prosecutors.
The new charges against Figueroa-Berrios include counts of third- and fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct offenses and four counts of sexual contact – misrepresentation of medical treatment, according to the prosecutor’s office. He will be due in court for an arraignment at a later date.
Figueroa-Berrios “currently remains in jail on his pending cases,” the office said.
A Sinai Grace spokeswoman told The Detroit News that the hospital screens job applicants and had “no indication” of concern relating to Figueroa-Berrios when he was hired.
“Upon becoming aware of allegations against Mr. Berrios, Sinai-Grace proactively initiated contact with and notified law enforcement,” the spokeswoman, Shelly Weiss Friedberg, said in a statement to the newspaper last week.
“The hospital also immediately suspended and ultimately terminated his employment,” Friedberg added. “We do not condone any type of abuse and are cooperating fully with law enforcement.”
Prior to Worthy announcing new charges against Figueroa-Berrios on January 21, he was previously charged in connection with sexually assaulting a 41-year-old woman he knew inside of a “porta-john” on May 9, 2025, the prosecutor’s office said.
He was also previously charged with sexually assaulting two other Detroit Medical Center Sinai Grace Hospital patients, a 31-year-old woman and a 37-year-old woman, in August 2025, according to prosecutors.
