Former NFL quarterback Brian Hoyer announced the death of his sister-in-law, Carissa, in an emotional post on social media.

“It is with a heavy heart that I write this. On February 13th, my little brother lost his wife Carissa suddenly and unexpectedly,” Brian, 40, shared on Wednesday, February 18. “She leaves behind him and their four little girls, Josie, Lainey, Ellie, and Hattie. In an instant, he became a widowed father to four daughters under 12.”

Carissa was 36 years old, according to a GoFundMe page arranged in her memory, and married to Brian’s brother Brett. The couple’s daughters are 10, 9, 7 and 2, per the fundraiser.

“If you can find it in your heart to help us help him and his girls through this unimaginable season, we would be forever grateful,” Brian said about the GoFundMe. “We can’t take away their pain, but together we can help carry the weight. Your support can help ease their burden during this painful time. Please consider donating or sharing to show you care. Every bit helps.”

“At just 37 years old, Brett is now navigating life as a widowed father to four young girls,” the GoFundMe says. “The grief is overwhelming, and the road ahead feels daunting. As they face the painful reality of life without Cari, the added financial burden brings even more uncertainty during an already heartbreaking time.”

The page adds, “Beyond immediate costs, this fund will help ease daily pressures as Brett steps into the role of a single parent. Our hope is simple. We want Brett to be able to focus on loving his girls, grieving together, and beginning the long process of healing without the constant weight of financial stress.”

The fundraiser has raised over $80,000 with a goal of $100,000 at the time of publication.

Brian and Brett’s brother, Matt, posted a message of gratitude on behalf of the Hoyer family via the GoFundMe on Wednesday.

“Every donation, every message, every act of kindness has been felt,” Matt wrote. “In the middle of unimaginable grief, you have reminded Brett, Josie, Lainey, Ellie, and Hattie that they are not alone. You have surrounded them with love and support during the darkest days of their lives.”

He added, “While nothing can replace Cari’s presence, your generosity is helping lift a burden and provide stability as Brett steps into this new reality of raising four young daughters without their Mother. We cannot thank you enough for standing with our family. Please continue to keep Brett and the girls in your prayers as they navigate the days ahead.”
