Former United States President Joe Biden’s daughter Ashley Biden has filed for divorce from husband Howard Krein.
A representative for Ashley, 44, confirmed to The Philadelphia Inquirer that the documents had been filed in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas on Monday, August 11.
That same day, Ashley posted a since-deleted Instagram Story image of herself walking through a park and flashing a thumbs up, set to Beyoncé’s “Freedom,” per the outlet.
The outlet reported that she also reposted the quote, “New life, new beginnings means new boundaries. New ways of being that won’t look or sound like they did before,” which was set to Ms. Lauryn Hill’s “Freedom Time.”
Ashley — who is the daughter of Joe, 82, and wife Jill Biden — tied the knot with Krein in 2012 in Delaware, one year after he proposed. (Joe also shared son Hunter and late children Beau and Naomi with first wife Neila Hunter, who died in 1972.)
“We are pleased to announce that our daughter, Ashley Blazer Biden, married Dr. Howard Krein this evening in Wilmington, Delaware,” the couple said in a statement from the Joe’s office to Us Weekly at the time, while he served as Vice President during Barack Obama’s two-term presidency.
The statement continued, “The private ceremony was attended by the bride and groom’s close family and friends. We’re happy to welcome Howard into our family, and we wish them all the best in their new life together.”
Ashley’s divorce filing comes three months after Joe shared his diagnosis of an “aggressive” form of prostate cancer.
“Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms,” a May statement read. “On Friday, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone.”
The statement continued, “While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive, which allows for effective management.”
Joe’s office explained that he and his family were “reviewing treatment options with his physicians” and subsequently shared that a “small nodule” had been found on his prostate during an annual physical exam.
Joe has since addressed his health battle. “Cancer touches us all. Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places,” Joe wrote via Instagram at the time. “Thank you for lifting us up with love and support.”
