John Corbett is just like Us as he was rooting for Aidan and Carrie to be endgame on And Just Like That.

“When I started talking to Michael Patrick King about even coming back, you know, it was my first question, like, well, what’s going to happen?” Corbett, 64, exclusively told Us Weekly while promoting his new film Soul on Fire earlier this month. “I was one of the only people, besides some of the other writers and Sarah Jessica [Parker], who knew that it wouldn’t ultimately work out.”

Corbett played Parker’s love interest Aidan Shaw in Sex and the City for two seasons. On the series, Aidan and Carrie (Parker) had an on and off relationship that started with a meetcute. However, the pair broke up after Carrie had an affair with Mr. Big (Chris Noth) in season 3.

The following season, Carrie and Big are not together and she decides to reach out to Aidan via email. They reconnect and eventually rekindle their relationship. As their romance got more serious, Aidan proposed. While Carrie said yes initially, she started feeling anxious about marriage. Aidan, for his part, still had trust issues with her from her affair with Big. They end their engagement at the end of season 4.

In the Sex and the City movies, fans learned that Aidan did get his happily ever after with a woman named Kathy and the pair share a son. Carrie, for her part, ended up with Big after all.

However, in the revival series, And Just Like That, Big died in the premiere. Corbett reprised his role in the second and third seasons. When it was revealed that Aidan was divorced, viewers had hoped that meant he had a second chance at love with Carrie.

Carrie and Aidan reunited for dinner and started briefly dating. However their connection didn’t last as Aidan’s life was in Virginia not New York City, where Carrie remained. While Aidan and Carrie didn’t work out as a couple, Corbett still gushed about returning to the show and being a member of “Sex and the City family” for the past two decades.

“I just love every single person involved, whether they’re on camera or making us a little peanut butter and jelly sandwich,” he told Us. “It’s just such a tight knit group.”

Corbett’s return for And Just Like That was met with a bout of nostalgia as he got reacquainted with his old stomping grounds.

“I got to be in New York, and I stayed in my original apartment that I stayed in 25 years ago by Lincoln Center for both my last two seasons,” he recalled.

By the time Corbett finished up his arc, news broke that And Just Like That would be coming to an end after three seasons leaving Aidan and Carrie’s fate in limbo.

“When Aidan and Carrie had their final scene in the street. There were two or three more episodes,” he explained. “So when I was at home watching it on TV, I didn’t know what those stories were, because I had already left, and by the time, I think, the last two were going to air, was when they announced that the show wasn’t coming back.”
