Kelly Clarkson detailed a “really unfortunate” wardrobe malfunction that taught her a huge lesson about performing.
“I had something happen on tour once where my skirt, the clip broke and it dropped, and I dropped so fast,” Clarkson, 42, recalled during the Friday, April 11, episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show. “Long story short, I was commando.”
She continued, “It was a long skirt, and something happened to where it was like, ‘Oh, OK.’ It’s TMI for America.”
Clarkson joked that she was singing “Breakaway” during the incident as someone ran out on stage to pin the outfit back together.
“I stepped on glass the same night. It was like, ‘What’s wrong? Who did I piss off?’” Clarkson quipped. “It happens though, and you just to keep swimming.”
Clarkson was telling the story to Nick Jonas and Adrienne Warren, who were on the show to promote The Last Five Years on Broadway. The talk show host shared her anecdote after Jonas, 32, detailed a similar incident in which his pants ripped on stage.

“It’s really interesting, during the promo for the show, we have to think of really unconventional ways to promote the show — kidding,” Jonas said. “But this did end up being our, weirdly, biggest ticket spike days.”
Last month, Jonas was updating fans on The Last Five Years rehearsals via Instagram when he detailed a rather embarrassing experience.
“Basically, we’re in rehearsals, I’m in front of everybody and I jump up on this platform and my pants split,” he told Clarkson on Friday. “Here’s the thing, I had literally just purchased these pants. I didn’t think through how they would be stretch-wise.”
Warren, 37, noted that Jonas “really went for it” while they were preparing for the show.

“Look, whatever sells tickets is what I say,” Jonas said, noting that his pants were eventually fixed. “I can wear them again.”
Jonas and Warren play Jamie and Cathy, respectively, in the Broadway show, which officially opened earlier this month.
In his Instagram video, which was uploaded on March 4, Jonas explained that he was singing the song “Moving Too Fast” when the pants incident went down.
“I hear a [rip],” Jonas said. “I’m like, ‘Oh no. Oh no.’ And I feel a cool breeze in a place you don’t want to feel a cool breeze.”
The singer said that “duct tape” and “safety pins” didn’t work, so the stage crew stepped in.
“Thankfully the stage management department jumped over to Target and bought me some black shorts to finish rehearsals in,” he said. “That was my day, how was yours?”
