Kody Brown is not one to back down from a challenge, but his wife, Robyn Brown, wasn’t as thrilled about him joining the cast of Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test.
“She was like, ‘I just don’t think I would.’ She is the kind of wife that has concern for everybody, and so she’s a worrier,” Kody, 56, exclusively told Us Weekly on Wednesday, September 10, noting that Robyn, 46, was hesitant about him competing on season 4 of the Fox reality show.
He explained, “She’s going to worry about me, and she’s like, ‘I don’t want you doing that.’”
The Sister Wives star confessed that Robyn was valid in her apprehension. “It’s the first thing you learn when you step into it, is like, ‘This could kill you. You might die. And we’re serious, so don’t be stupid,’” Kody said of the show’s warnings.

During Special Forces, each celebrity contestant is put through real tests that the United States Special Forces trainees must complete to become part of the military. They are taught by a team of ex-special forces operatives.
While Kody was excited to take part, he told Us that Robyn initially didn’t comment on the idea of him being on the show.
“When they called me about Special Forces, I’m telling my wife, and she’s like, ‘We’re going to have to discuss this.’ One month went by, another month, we never discussed it,” he recalled. “[I’m like], ‘We’re not going to discuss it, are we?’ She says, ‘I know you’re going to do it. There’s no way can stop you.’”
Kody confessed, “Maybe going was stupid, but it’s the kind of challenge that you almost relish.”
The reality star continued, “It’s like, in my age, the idea of having a purpose to get into the kind of shape you need to be for this was just marvelous. It was almost spiritual.”
Kody said that eventually, Robyn came around to the reality star pushing himself to the limit. He revealed that “after the experience” Robyn told him, “Now, I want to watch it.”
He said, “We don’t want to watch each other on television [but] she wants to watch me on Special Forces.”
Fans first met Kody and Robyn when she was courting the polygamist to become his fourth wife on TLC’s Sister Wives.
The couple spiritually tied the knot in May 2010, when Kody was already married to Meri Brown, Janelle Brown and Christine Brown. He and Robyn legally wed in December 2014 and he adopted her three children from a prior marriage. (The couple share two children of their own, Solomon, 13, and Ariella, 9.)
Kody’s first three marriages didn’t last and one by one the women left him. Christine, 53, announced their split in November 2021, followed by Janelle, 56, who revealed in December 2022 that she and Kody had separated. Meri, 54, confirmed her split from Kody in January 2023.
Through it all, Robyn has stayed by Kody’s side. Despite all the heartbreak surrounding their family turmoil, Kody told Us on Wednesday that Robyn is “proud” of him “in every way.”
He confessed that his wife doesn’t like when he’s “not well behaved” and “says mean things about people,” but other than that she is his No. 1 fan.
Robyn’s support is something Kody doesn’t take for granted after all he endured on Special Forces.
“The experience was interesting. There’s not a dull moment,” Kody teased of his time on the show. “Even when you’re sleeping, you’re just worried you’re gonna get woken up in the middle of the night and dragged out into a pool of cold water.”
He revealed, “There was one time when my muscles gave out. We were supposed to be swinging across monkey bars, and I had sand on my hands, and I couldn’t cup the monkey bars. I just didn’t have the strength anymore to do it.”
Kody remembered being “weaker” than some of the other male contestants, but he had “enduring fortitude” that helped him push through.
Season 4 of Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test premieres on Fox Thursday, September 25, at 9 p.m. ET.
