‘Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story’ (2022)

If The Ed Gein Story is your first outing with Murphy’s Monster series, then you undoubtedly have to go back to the beginning with The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. Starring Evan Peters as the titular murderer, the series takes a look at Dahmer’s life from his upbringing to becoming one of the world’s most prolific serial killers and cannibals. It depicts how a shy child could turn into something near-inhuman through a mixture of nature and nurture.

Gruesome and compelling in equal measure, the series received praise from critics for its ability to walk the line between empathy and exploitation and how it explores the inherent humanity of Dahmer while also depicting plainly the monstrousness of his many crimes.

‘Mindhunter’ (2017-2019)

For a series that centers on the detectives tasked with hunting down dangerous serial killers as opposed to the killers themselves, you’ll find a lot to love with Mindhunter. Led by Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany, the show takes place at the dawn of serial-killer profiling during the late 1970s and ’80s, as two FBI Agents work together to look into the minds of infamous murderers like Charles Manson and Edmund Kemper and use the knowledge to find new killers.

Directed with sleek style by David Fincher, Mindhunter is both a thrilling crime drama and a character study. The series boasts a unique visual style on top of its gripping narratives and rich character writing, setting it apart from the crowded TV crime genre. The central performances of Groff and McCallany, along with Anna Torv, are also first-rate, and the three actors boast fantastic chemistry.

‘American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace’ (2018)

Ryan Murphy sure does love his crime and killers, and this second season of his American Crime Story anthology series does a terrific job of weaving together the stories from both the victim and the perpetrator. The show stars Darren Criss as Andrew Cunanan, a sociopath who becomes obsessed with and jealous of the legendary fashion designer Gianni Versace (played by Édgar Ramírez). The series flashes back and forth between the murder and Cunanan’s time in hiding, and the lives of both Cunanan and Versaci in the years leading up to the killing.

Ryan Murphy‘s Monster has spotlighted some of the most infamous true crime cases — and sparked backlash along the way. The first season debuted in 2022 and centered around Evan Peters‘ portrayal of Jeffrey Dahmer. The series excels in the way it unfurls its intricate narrative, attempting to paint an in-depth portrait of Versace in addition to attempting to understand Cunanan and the kind of person he was, and how he could be driven to kill not just one but multiple people. Criss’s nuanced, commanding performance of Cunanan was highly lauded by critics, in addition to Penélope Cruz as Versace’s sister, Donatella.
