Police in the United Kingdom say a man has been detained after a vehicle struck several people on Water Street who were on the street celebrating Liverpool’s Premier League win.

In a statement, Merseyside Police said they had detained a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area in connection with the incident.

“We would ask people not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding tonight’s incident on Water Street in Liverpool city centre,” a police spokesperson said.

“Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision.”

Police haven’t given any details about how many people were injured but an air ambulance is on the scene and a number of police cordons are in place.

In a post on social media platform X, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said “The scenes in Liverpool are appalling — my thoughts are with all those injured or affected.”

Starmer also thanked the emergency services for their “swift and ongoing response.”

Liverpool FC held an open-top bus parade through the city to celebrate its Premier League triumph, with tens of thousands of fans lining the streets of the 10-mile route to see the team.
