Mindy Kaling is shooting down what she says is a common misconception about her friend Meghan Markle.

In a TIME magazine interview published on Wednesday, February 19, Kaling, 45, insisted the Duchess of Sussex is “down-to-earth.”

“I think a misconception about Meghan is that she’s in any way fussy or has expectations of fanciness,” Kaling told the outlet.

Referencing Markle’s knack for entertaining, Kaling added, “She really is a down-to-earth person who knows a lot of fun tricks to make entertaining and cooking easier.”

Kaling and Markle, 43, recently teamed up for Netflix’s new lifestyle series, With Love, Meghan, which will drop on the streaming platform on March 4. A trailer for the show features Markle rustling up a dish for Kaling in the kitchen of the home she shares with husband Prince Harry in Montecito, California.

“I was on maternity leave with my daughter in March and April, and Meghan texted me that she was doing a show where she was going to cook for her friends,” Kaling told TIME. “Would I want to come to Montecito and have her cook for me? I wanted to get taken care of in that moment of my life. That was a fun maternity leave field trip.”

She continued: “And I left with a basket of fresh produce and homemade jam and hot sauce because she knew I loved hot sauce. She’s a very generous woman who knew I needed a break.”

It’s not the first time Kaling has praised Markle and her cooking skills. She told Deadline in January that Markle “unsurprisingly kind of blew me out of the water” when the Suits alum cooked for her while filming the series.

Netflix Meghan Markle’s forthcoming Netflix show With Love, Meghan was not filmed in her and Prince Harry’s Montecito home, Us Weekly can confirm. Daily Mail was first to report that while the Duchess of Sussex did cook in a California home for the series, it wasn’t the home she actually lives in. The Montecito house […]

“The thing about her recipes and being there is that it’s just really accessible,” Kaling continued. “She has a garden from scratch, which I could never do, and chickens … they’d probably all die if I tried to take care of chickens. I was like, ‘Oh, this is very accessible.’”

Kaling said she didn’t get to taste anything Prince Harry, 40, cooked during her visit to the couple’s home despite him being around at the time.

However, she said the word on the street was that the Prince possesses some impressive cooking skills of his own as well.

“I heard he’s actually a pretty good cook,” she added. “He knows his way around a kitchen.”
