Saturday Today anchor Peter Alexander stepped away from his role on the NBC news show to spend more time with his family.
“This morning I am bursting with pride and with gratitude. I’ve had the most incredible experience over 22 years with NBC News,” Alexander said during a March 2026 broadcast. “I could not be more grateful for … the leaders and mentors here who have believed in me and given me more opportunities than I ever dreamed of.”
Alexander nabbed his gig on Saturday Today in 2018.
“It is literally so fun,” he continued. “But because I live in Washington, [D.C.], it’s also a trek. I’ve been away from my home more than 80 nights in the last seven months, [and] more than 200 Friday nights away from my family in the last seven years.”
He thanked the network for “undoubtedly the most exciting years” of his career, ending his statement by adding, “Thank you for your trust and your confidence.”
Several NBC personalities, including cohost Laura Jarrett, shared their love for Alexander following his announcement.
“Peter, we love you, we are going to miss you,” she said, getting emotional. “We have laughed so hard we want to cry with you, we have learned from you and we are not the only ones.”

Who Is Peter Alexander?
Peter Alexander is a news anchor who started his national career at NBC News in 2012 after several gigs at local news stations.
Initially, he was hired as the NBC News White House correspondent, a role he’s held on and off during his time at NBC, before being named the Saturday Today host in October 2018.
Who Is Peter Alexander’s Wife?
Peter Alexander married Alison Starling in 2012. She is also a journalist, having appeared on Washington, D.C.’s WJLA-TV weekday broadcast from August 2003 to November 2023.
Alexander and Starling met in 2001, and they were together for 10 years before getting engaged in 2011. They wed in Washington, D.C. in April 2012.

During his March 2026 announcement, Peter Alexander explained that his family is the reason for his departure.
“In this limited window before my daughters lose interest in hanging out with me [and] it’s already happened quick, I’m eager to carve out a better balance between my personal and professional lives,” he explained. “[I want] to challenge myself with something new. I’m excited because I was taught, ‘Family first, the rest is details.’”
