The Virginia State Police have issued a statement as the manhunt for former high school football coach Travis Turner nears an ominous anniversary.
“The search for Travis Turner remains active, but there are no new developments to share at this time. Because Turner is considered a fugitive, the U.S. Marshals Service continues to lead the investigation,” the VSP said in an exclusive statement to Us on Tuesday, October 27. “We understand the public’s concerns and frustrations as this case reaches the one-year mark.”
Turner, the former coach at Union High School in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, has been missing since November 20, 2025, when he disappeared into the woods behind his Wise County home while carrying a rifle. At the time, authorities were on the way to question Turner about an open investigation. He was subsequently charged with five counts of child pornography and five counts of using a computer to solicit a minor.
“The Virginia State Police, along with our federal and local partners, remain committed to finding answers,” the VSP said on Tuesday. “This is a complex investigation, and we ask for the community’s continued understanding and patience as we work through every layer of the case and pursue every credible lead.”
The statement added, “We encourage the public to continue reporting any actionable information — no matter how small — as it may help move the investigation forward. Law enforcement remains actively engaged, evaluating new information and dedicating all available resources to bringing this case to a resolution. We are grateful for the public’s support and urge anyone with information on Turner’s whereabouts to contact the Virginia State Police or the U.S. Marshals Service.”
A $5,000 reward is still being offered for information on Turner’s location.
In March, the VSP said there had been “no credible sightings” of Turner.
“Every single lead has been vetted and followed up on, and all have been unfounded,” Captain J. Daniels, VSP Bureau of Criminal Investigation Wytheville Field Office, said at the time. “We need the public to continue providing information. Someone knows something that will lead to his whereabouts.”
Shortly after the coach went missing, the Turner family issued a statement to Us explaining the alarming circumstances surrounding his disappearance.
“Travis’ car and keys were left at home,” the statement said. “Travis wore contact lenses by day and glasses in the evenings. Travis’ contact lens supplies and glasses were left at home. Travis’ wallet, license, cash and all its contents were left in the home.”
The statement continued, “Travis is prescribed certain daily medications which he needs, those were left in the home. It is not like Travis to disappear or stay away from home.”
An attorney for the Turner family — including his wife, Leslie — told Us they have “cooperated fully with law-enforcement in their ongoing efforts to locate Travis.”
“Family members and friends have also conducted search efforts in the surrounding woods,” the November 2025 statement said. “These efforts have been limited by weather conditions and with respect for the official operations underway.”
The statement added, “When Travis did not return home that evening, his wife promptly notified local law enforcement. She was advised that a missing-person report could not be taken until at least 24 hours had passed. The following day, she filed a missing-person report with the Virginia State Police.”
