While Savannah Guthrie was sad to say goodbye to Hoda Kotb on Today, she was happy to throw away some of the items her former coanchor left behind.

“It’s a new era, it’s the Craig [Melvin] era, and we go and we sit on the set and there are these trays,” Guthrie, 53, explained in a joint interview with Melvin, 45, on the Wednesday, January 15, episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “It might have a mint or whatever it is. We realized that all of the trays, they were all Hoda’s stuff and it was, like, one contact and expired bean dip and belly button lint and all this stuff.”

Choosing to declutter the Today set, Guthrie sent Kotb, 60, a hilarious video of herself throwing out Kotb’s collection of belongings. “Oh, hey girl. Guess you didn’t want any of this s—,” Guthrie quipped in the clip, which host Jimmy Fallon showed on-air. “Don’t mind me,” Guthrie added before dumping Kotb’s tray items into the garbage. “Love you.”

After the clip, Guthrie pointed out how the tray itself looked dirty. “It had, like, rusted barnacles on it,” she joked. “I mean, it was disgusting.”

Savannah Guthrie wasn’t surprised by cohost Hoda Kotb‘s decision to leave the Today show. “Hoda and I have had this discussion for years and years,” Guthrie, 52, exclusively told Us Weekly at Project Healthy Minds 2nd Annual World Mental Health Day Gala at Spring Studios in New York City on Thursday, October 10. “We’re dear […]

Fallon, 50, recalled once being surprised by the state of Kotb’s purse, stating, “It looks like a binder of papers. It looked like my dad’s old wallet.”

Guthrie continued to poke fun at Kotb by noting how she sometimes opts to use a plastic bag over a purse at red carpet events. “And the Ziploc [bag], which is clear, will have a banana and a tampon [in it],” she shared.

Kotb ended her run as Guthrie’s Today coanchor and Jenna Bush Hager’s fourth hour of Today cohost on Friday, January 10. Fallon was one of several celebrities who stopped by the show to celebrate her final day. As a farewell gift, Fallon gave Kotb a framed piece of the NBC peacock logo carpet from the elevators in 30 Rock.

“I entitled [sic] it ‘Onward and Upward’ ‘cause you’re getting on the elevator and going up, right?” he said on Friday’s episode of Today With Hoda & Jenna. “But then I signed it, and then no one can read my writing. My handwriting’s so bad so it looks like it says ‘Osmond and Uptown.’”

Earlier in the day, Kotb praised her Today cohosts as Melvin prepared to take over her role as Guthrie’s coanchor. “Savannah, oh, my God. You’re my person, you’re my person. You know who shows up for everybody? This girl. … She’s in the room, she’s always in the room, and I love you,” she gushed on air. “Craig, I’m so happy for you. You’ve earned this, you own this, and come Monday at 7 o’clock a.m., I am gonna be dead asleep. But you’re gonna be fantastic. You’re gonna bring it home. Craig, you’re gonna be so good. You and Savannah are gonna be magic.”

Contrary to Kotb’s comments, Guthrie told Fallon on Wednesday that Kotb “got up earlier than me on Monday.” She added: “Hoda wakes up at 3 a.m. on Saturday. But she’s doing great. We FaceTime with her.”

While Kotb announced she has a wellness app and company in the works, she has been enjoying her first week away from Today by taking her daughters, Haley, 8, and Hope, 5, to school. “Another regular … ordinary … spectacular day xo,” she captioned pics of herself and her girls, whom she shares with ex-fiancé Joel Schiffman, walking down her driveway via Instagram on Thursday, January 16.
