US President Donald Trump’s decision to suspend military support to Ukraine is making waves across Europe.

The move, following his tense exchange with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has sparked reactions from the Ukrainian community in Italy, with protests already taking place across the country.

On Friday, Ukrainians renewed their appeal as they rallied in the Italian capital, demanding the US restore its support.

Oles Horodetskyy, the president of the Christian Ukrainian Association in Italy, told Euronews they feel abandoned by “what they call a friendly nation”.

They have urged Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to stand with Ukraine and call for peace negotiations under fair conditions.

Meanwhile, the Italian government believes Rome can help bridge the gap between both the US and the EU and considers Europe’s defence plans essential.

The far-right Brothers of Italy party MP, Giangiacomo Calovini, is convinced that Rome can serve as a mediator between the two sides.

“We certainly cannot afford divisions within the Western bloc”, Calovini told Euronews, “Rome can help connect Washington and Brussels.”
