Doctors and scientists are the most trusted professions across 11 EU countries, while politicians are the least trusted.

The data was compiled from the latest Ipsos Global Trustworthiness Index, involving more than 23,000 adults under the age of 75 across 32 countries, including 11 EU countries like France, Italy, Romania, and Hungary.

In the Netherlands, 73% of respondents trust doctors, the highest percentage among EU countries, followed by France and Spain at 66%.

Scientists and teachers also enjoy high levels of trust, particularly in Spain and the Netherlands.

On the other hand, politicians, social media influencers, and government ministers are perceived as the least trusted professions.

In Poland, only 8% of interviewees express trust in politicians, followed by Spain at 10%, and Hungary, Italy, and Romania at 11%.

However, there is a silver lining: trust in politicians and ministers has gradually increased since reaching a low in 2018, gaining six percentage points since then.

Is trust equal across generations?

Trust in these professions also differs across generations.

Baby boomers (individuals born between 1946 and 1964) show more trust in the police, with 45% compared to 35% of millennials (those born between 1981 and 1996).

Meanwhile, 20% of Generation Z (people born between 1997 and 2012) trust influencers, in contrast to only 9% of baby boomers.

According to Statista, Gen Z and millennials are the main users of TikTok and Instagram, where influencers produce most of their content.

“Technology, in particular the rapid evolution of how people communicate and interact, is another generation-shaping consideration,” Michael Dimock, president of Pew Research Center said. “Baby boomers grew up as television expanded dramatically, changing their lifestyles and connection to the world in fundamental ways.”
