Yellowstone‘s spinoff Marshals killed off Kayce’s wife Monica — but what does that mean for his dating life?

“We will see him navigate single dad life while a girl may show interest in him and he’s like, ‘Wait,’” Marshals star Ash Santos teased exclusively to Us Weekly. “That was probably the most intriguing part for me because we get this new side of Kayce that we didn’t get to see in Yellowstone.”

Santos noted that Monica (Kelsey Asbille) will continue to be honored on the show, adding, “The entire season is shaped by — at least for Kayce — his grief and it ends up affecting all the characters in a different way … She still is in the fabric of Kayce’s story in every single episode. And we watch Tate as he becomes a teenager and now he’s got his own struggles and his mother isn’t there.”

Arielle Kebbel, meanwhile, weighed in on whether Kayce (Luke Grimes) could find love again with someone from his inner circle — like her character, Belle.

Before Kayce scored a spinoff, Asbille, 34, weighed in on Monica and Kayce’s future.,

“Oh, [there are] definitely [hurdles]. That’s I guess part of marriage, the hurdles,” Asbille, 34, told The Hollywood Reporter in November 2024. “That’s just life! But I think they’ve always been endgame for each other. It’s what they’ve been working so hard towards, building this family and making a home with their son and looking forward. So I hope they get that peace in the end.”

Grimes, meanwhile, showed support for a spinoff centered around the fictional couple.

Yellowstone is known for its over-the-top plot lines and complicated family drama, but the show’s cast and crew has also been involved in plenty of offscreen controversy over the years. “[Kelsey and I] keep saying that if Taylor calls and it’s something he wants to do and it’s something he wants to write, we would absolutely say yes,” he noted.

More recently, Grimes, 42, teased his character’s arc in the first season of CBS’ upcoming show, telling TV Insider on Tuesday, February 17, “Being a cowboy was at the heart of his character. He wanted his little slice of heaven and some cattle. Every other Dutton wanted the world.”

The actor went on to hint at an onscreen shakeup.

“[But] before Marshals starts, the worst thing that could possibly happen to him happens,” he said, hinting the event will propel Kayce to “take this job [and] become a useful member of his community” again.

He continued, “It feels good to be good at something and use it to help people.”
