Two sisters and another woman have been arrested in connection to the death of a Texas mother of five children.
Officers responded to Val Verde Regional Medical Center around 2:10 p.m. on Thursday, June 25, after they received a report of a woman “suffering from multiple stab wounds,” according to a news release shared via the Del Rio Police Department’s Facebook page.
Authorities said that the assault took place on East 10th Street in Del Rio.
“Due to the severity of her injuries, the victim was transported to a medical facility in San Antonio for emergency treatment,” the department said.
The victim, who was identified as Caroline Peña, died from her injuries later that day at 9 p.m.
Authorities looked at surveillance footage and spoke to witnesses, and they were able to get enough evidence to arrest sisters Kitty Mia Diaz, Amaya Cookie Diaz and a third suspect, Kyandra Renee Faz, on June 25.
“At approximately 4:00 p.m., officers located and arrested Kitty Mia Diaz and Amaya Cookie Diaz without incident,” the department said in the Facebook post. “A short time later, officers located and arrested Kyandra Renee Faz in connection with the investigation … Following the victim’s death, [they] were each charged with murder.”
Footage obtained by KENS 5 showed Kitty, 21, and Amaya, 19, being arrested at a home, and they were escorted by officers while wearing handcuffs.
It is not currently clear if there was a motive in the killing and if Peña, 32, knew Kitty, Amaya or Faz, 21, prior to the incident.
Following Peña’s killing, her loved ones set up a GoFundMe page to support her family, including her five children. The page said that Peña, 32, was “stabbed multiple times in broad daylight.”
“Her nephew rushed her to the hospital, and she was airlifted to San Antonio, but she did not survive. The loss has devastated her family…,” the GoFundMe page read. “Three women have been charged with murder, and investigators say additional charges are possible, though a motive has not been established.”
During the attack, Peña was stabbed twice in the back and one time in the side of her stomach. “One of the stab wounds ended up puncturing her lungs, which was the fatal cause,” Tina, a friend of Peña, told KENS 5.
The police department said that the three suspects were transported to the GEO Correctional Facility and are currently being held pending further court appearances.
It is not currently clear if any of the three suspects have entered pleas or retained legal counsel following their arrests. The Del Rio Police Department did not immediately respond to Us Weekly’s request for comment regarding the case.
The investigation into the murder remains ongoing.
