At the top of our binge-watch list is Miami Vice, the critically acclaimed feature film adaptation of the seminal 1980s TV show starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx as stylish police detectives Crockett and Tubbs.

‘Miami Vice’ (2006)

Sonny Crockett (Colin Farrell) and Rico Tubbs (Jamie Foxx) are Miami’s best cops, but even they are stumped when a Colombian drug cartel manages to evade their every move. When they realize a mole is informing the Colombians about their every move, the duo decide to go deep undercover as drug traffickers without telling anyone. Things get complicated when Crockett falls in love with Isabella (Gong Li), who just happens to be the cartel’s kingpin’s girlfriend. Does Isabella feel the same, or is this just another trap that the detective duo is being lured into?
With no major movies scheduled for wide release this weekend, streamers like HBO Max and Prime Video have taken full advantage of that programming gap and opted to debut some high-profile films. Based on the hit 1980s NBC series starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas. Miami Vice isn’t just a cheesy cash grab. Directed by respected auteur Michael Mann, who produced the original show, Miami Vice is a stylish and densely plotted crime drama that has so many things going on that it’s hard to keep up. While some may view that as a flaw, others might enjoy sifting through the film’s many subplots – and figuring out what the characters’ real motives are. As the main duo, Farrell and Foxx look great. Their acting is good too, but that’s almost beside the point. Miami Vice is a vibes-based movie, and on that front, it succeeds brilliantly.

‘The Boy Next Door’ (2015)

When 19-year-old Noah Sandborn (Ryan Guzman) moves next door, single mother and English teacher Claire Peterson (Jennifer Lopez) doesn’t think much of it. That changes when Noah befriends Claire’s teenage son and flirts with her. They soon have a passionate one-night stand, which Claire regrets and Noah obsesses over. Claire pleads with him to forget about their affair and move on, but Noah isn’t so willing to let her go. He wants Claire in his life, and he’s willing to do anything to prove his love for her.
Let’s get this out of the way quickly: The Boy Next Door is camp. It takes a Lifetime story and treats it seriously, resulting in a wildly contrived thriller that’s less suspenseful than it’s silly. It’s great fun, though, especially when Guzman’s young lover gifts his MILF crush a first edition of The Iliad to impress her. A first edition Iliad doesn’t exist in real life, but bless its heart, The Boy Next Door doesn’t know that, which makes it all the more enjoyable. Lopez takes this salacious material seriously, which only heightens the entertainment value. You can’t help but admire a movie that makes a seemingly innocuous item like an EpiPen into a potentially lethal weapon.

‘The Wild Robot’ (2024)

Who is “The Wild Robot”? It’s Roz (Lupita Nyong’o), an android who crash-lands on a faraway island and befriends various animals, like the maternal opossum Pinktail (the late Catherine O’Hara), the sly fox Fink (Pedro Pascal) and the naive gosling Brightbill (Kit Connor). Roz grows close to her found family, which is why she resists when her owners come to the island to retrieve her. Can Roz rebel against her programming and stay with her friends?
Nominated for the Best Animated Feature Oscar, The Wild Robot is one of the most inventive non-Disney animated movies made in the last decade. The film tells a classic coming-of-age story about a robot who realizes she has more purpose in life than following orders – she can love, too. In addition to its colorful visuals and great score by Kris Bowers, The Wild Robot has a terrific vocal cast, with O’Hara and Pascal standing out as Roz’s de facto parents who help her realize her true self.
