In August, Netflix didn’t have any new or returning original shows that hit over 90 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
Even the smash hit Wednesday only scored 83 percent for its second season earlier this month.
Fortunately, there are two new Netflix shows from outside studios that have at least 90 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. But we’ve had to fudge the criteria for one of those shows like we’ve never fudged before.
Because adding a third new show at or above 90 percent wasn’t an option, we’ve added an older Netflix series to close out this month’s roundup.
‘Love Life’ Season 2 (2021)
Rotten Tomatoes rank: 95 percent
As an example of how difficult it is to hit a high score in Rotten Tomatoes, the first season of Love Life only had a 63 percent rank. Season 2 was largely a different show with a new cast and a fresh story that roared out of the gate with a 95 percent rank on RT. That’s very impressive by any metric.
Anna Kendrick briefly reprises her leading role as Darby Carter to set up season 2’s main character, Marcus Watkins (William Jackson Harper). Marcus is married to Emily Hexton (Maya Kazan), but he makes a serious error in judgment that leads to the end of their union. As Marcus picks up the pieces of his life, he has to determine what he’s really looking for in a relationship and what it will take to make him happy.
Love Life is streaming on Netflix.
‘Outlander’ (2014 – Present)
Rotten Tomatoes rank: 90 percent
Outlander season 7 part 1 hit Netflix this month with a Rotten Tomatoes rank of 95 percent, the highest in the show’s history. That helped bring up the average rank of Outlander to the coveted 90 percent score. This series blends history with fantasy and a touch of sci-fi as a World War II nurse, Claire Randall (Caitríona Balfe), finds herself transported back in time to 18th-century Scotland.
To survive, Claire had to marry Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), but the romantic bond between them came quickly. Through trials that tested their love and their relationship, Jamie and Claire have endured. Season 7 finds the Frasers facing their greatest challenge yet as the Revolutionary War unfolds in America. Claire may know how history unfolds, but that knowledge may not save them when the Frasers are forced to take sides.
Outlander is streaming on Netflix.
‘I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson’ (2021 – Present)
Rotten Tomatoes rank: 97 percent
In the absence of another newly arrived show with a RT rank, let’s celebrate the sketch comedy series I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson for being so consistently hilarious. Tim Robinson takes center stage for most of his skits, and he always seems to find new variations of himself to play while inhabiting these characters.
The Bear‘s Ayo Edebiri, Bob Odenkirk, Andy Samberg, Fred Armisen, Will Forte and other comedy veterans have made guest appearances on this show across its first three seasons. We’re still waiting for a fourth season to materialize, but the show’s already one of the best comedies in the streaming universe.
I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson is streaming on Netflix.
