Amber Rose is holding her hands up and admitting her part in the infamous Kanye West and Taylor Swift debacle at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.
Rose, 42, who was dating West, 48, at the time and was the rapper’s date to the awards ceremony, admitted that they may have overindulged in shots of Hennessy before West stormed the stage and said that Beyoncé, not Swift, should have won the award for Best Female Video.
“It’s partially my fault,” Rose admitted on the Tuesday, May 5, episode of the “Ball in the Family Podcast With Lonzo & Gelo Ball.”
“I don’t think I ever publicly talked about this. When I’m with a man, I’m his biggest cheerleader. I’mma hype you up. Even if you wrong, I’mma hype you up. Maybe that’s a toxic trait of mine but that’s just how I am,” the model explained, going on to explain the unique way she hyped up her man before the VMAs.
Rose said, “I was with Kanye at the time. We get in the car, we’re about to go to the VMAs and I go, ‘Babe, you got that bottle of Hennessy upstairs. You a superstar. You need to get the Henny. We need to be taking shots of Henny on the [red] carpet.’ I’m hyping him up. He’s like, ‘Yeah, let me go get the Henny.’”
“That’s how I am as a girlfriend, but it kind of backfired because all of a sudden I’m sitting there and he’s on stage. I’m like, ‘Oh s***, I was not expecting that,’” Rose added.
West famously interrupted Swift’s acceptance speech for Best Female Video at the awards ceremony, telling the audience that Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies” video should have won instead of the pop star’s “You Belong With Me” video.
“Yo, Taylor, I’m really happy for you, I’mma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time! One of the best videos of all time,” the rapper proclaimed at the time, setting off a feud between West and Swift that has gripped fans ever since.
Looking back, Rose said, “That’s naturally Kanye’s personality. Do I agree with how he did it? No. But was he right? Yes.”
As for her relationship with Swift, Rose said that she and the “Fortnight” singer never fell out over her then-boyfriend’s behavior.
“I have [spoken to her]. When my 13-year-old son was younger, he was a big Swiftie. She sent us a big box of all her merch, got us tickets to the concert,” she said of son Sebastian “Bash” Taylor Thomaz, whom she shares with ex Wiz Khalifa.
Rose continued, “We still have a bunch of Taylor Swift merch for my son and stuff like that. She understood that it wasn’t me that did it. I think we all got older and learned from our mistakes. It was a time in history that happened.”
