After Kayce’s wife and love interest died on Yellowstone‘s Marshals, Ash Santos is weighing in on if that affected her thoughts on her character, Andrea, getting together with the youngest Dutton sibling.
“I actually didn’t think about it until now,” Santos, 33, exclusively told Us. “It’s an overall theme in Yellowstone that no one really gets to live a happy ending so I am aware of that. It’s something where you naturally and selfishly hope that your character will get her happy ending one day but then you also have to remember it’s not the way of the show where people get to bask in their paradise and happily ever after for very long.”
Santos noted that the idea of an onscreen death has occurred to her even outside of a potential romance between Andrea and Kayce (Grimes).
“You can never feel too safe in this industry because you don’t know. And you know they always have to be in service to the story. So no matter what happens, you just hope that you can continue to do it,” she explained.
Before CBS picked up the show centered on Kayce Dutton, the Paramount+ franchise started with Taylor Sheridan‘s hit series Yellowstone, which premiered in 2018. Fans got to know the Duttons — including Kayce and Monica (Kelsey Asbille), who remained at the center of the show until the finale.
The franchise, however, has been plagued with death after two members of the Dutton family were killed in the OG series. Monica and Kayce’s love interest Dolly (Ellyn Jameson) were also killed in the spinoff as fans continue to hold out hope that he finds love with Santos’ Andrea.
“I didn’t see it at first. When I first got the role, I didn’t realize and I really wanted to stay with that because I think it gets complicated when you’re playing a character if you know everything that’s going to happen in the future. It’s kind of nice to just let yourself be surprised as if it is your life,” Santos told Us. “So with Andrea and Kayce, the connection between them in season 2 grows even deeper because he is the only person that she truly lets in to what she’s learning about her father because she knows he’s the only one that can relate because he’s gone through the same thing with John Dutton.”
She continued: “And the way he volunteers to come to New York with her and really stands by her, she can really lean on him. That’s just so special for any friendship. There’s a scene at the end of episode 15 that I won’t say anything about but we filmed it Saturday night and the Manhattan skyline was in front of us and we were on the water and it was night time and we were under like the Brooklyn Bridge and I was like, ‘Oh my God, this is stunning! The fans are gonna love this.’”
Santos subtly confirmed to Us that she has seen the fan edits devoted to Andrea and Kayce. Looking ahead, she’s excited for the audience to see what will come next for the pair.
“There’s little hints that are put in the script now with the writing. There’s something that the both of us go through a few episodes later and it really makes them start questioning how they even feel,” she teased. “I can’t speak for Luke but I think for me, when I play it, I’ve been really lucky with Luke. He is so tender-hearted and he is so genuine. He is an incredible scene partner because he’s always so honest and he brings so much depth to his work. And we can really relate personally because we’re both parents and we’re both in beautiful relationships. Being able to then step into Kayce and Andrea just feels honest.”
Marshals airs on CBS Sundays at 8:30 p.m. ET before streaming the next day on Paramount+.
