Two boys with 15 years between them were gunned down in South Carolina late Tuesday, February 17, and now, a 34-year-old man is behind bars facing murder and weapons charges.
Police in Rock Hill allege in a statement an argument broke out between Cedric Akeen Creighton and a teen named Jamareon Kimble.
According to police, Kimble, who is 19, and Creighton knew one another. The argument turned deadly when the two started exchanging gunfire.
Caught in the crossfire, which erupted inside a home shortly before 8 p.m. before spilling onto the street, was Jakolby Clifton, who was only 4.
Creighton was shot and remains in the hospital, where he is recovering from his wounds.
Other people were inside the house at the time of the shooting but were unscathed, police said.
Police have not said how Kimble and Creighton were acquainted and did not disclose what the argument prior to the shooting was about.
A neighbor told the Herald the shooting left the immediate community stunned.
Gloria Finch, who lives on Oates Street close to where the shooting happened, told the Herald she heard shots fired before 8 p.m. and thought someone was blowing off fireworks. “It was so loud,” Finch said.
Finch, who said she is a retired detention officer at the York County Sheriff’s Office, told the Herald the shooting scene was “like the wild, wild west.”
Once he is cleared medically, Creighton will be brought to the Rock Hill jail. He will also make his first court appearance after he is released from the hospital.
16th Circuit Solicitor Kevin Brackett told the Herald his team has been in contact with Rock Hill police about the killings. “We are aware of the situation, have been in communication with the Rock Hill Police Department, and have offered to assist in any way as they investigate this tragic incident,” Brackett said.
The investigation continues.
If convicted, Creighton faces a minimum of 30 years to life in prison for each charge.
In 2021, Creighton was involved in a riot inside Lancaster County Detention Center, which left parts of the facility scorched from fire.
Video of Creighton from the chaotic situation showed the inmate pacing back and forth in front of a cell as he spoke to someone inside. Then, another inmate identified as Troy Moore exits his cell and the two appear to argue as other inmates look on, according to Queen City News.
After some time of arguing, Creighton stopped, took his socks off, walked back to Moore and slugged him. The two started fighting, with other inmates jumping in. Moore was taken down, and while on the ground, took several blows to the head with hands and feet. The beating unfolded over 25 seconds.
Creighton was charged with assault and battery by a mob in the third degree. Bailey is accused of encouraging the other inmates to disobey the officers’ commands. He was also charged with inciting prisoners to riot, arson, willful injury to a courthouse or jail, and carrying a weapon by an inmate.
