Country singer Conner Smith was issued a misdemeanor state citation after being involved in a fatal car accident.
Multiple outlets confirmed that the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department issued the citation on Thursday, July 10, one month after the incident that resulted in the death of a 77-year-old woman named Dorothy Dobbins.
“Conner is incredibly grateful to the MNPD for their time and efforts to carefully investigate this tragic accident and has continued to cooperate at all times,” Smith’s attorney Worrick G. Robinson IV said in a statement to Us Weekly. “His thoughts remain with Ms. Dobbins’ family, and he remains committed to honoring her memory with compassion by supporting efforts to improve pedestrian safety and help prevent future tragedies.”
Smith, 24, was charged with a misdemeanor traffic offense in June after Dobbins was hit and killed by a truck he was driving in Nashville.
“The preliminary investigation indicates that a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, driven by Conner Smith, 24, was traveling north on 3rd Avenue North as Dobbins was crossing the roadway,” Nashville Police said in a press release posted online. “It appears that she was inside a marked crosswalk when she was struck around 7:30 p.m. Dobbins, who lived nearby, was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she died.”
According to authorities, Smith allegedly failed to yield the right of way to the pedestrian, which was a preliminary contributing factor for the fatal incident.
“He showed no signs of impairment,” the release continued. “There are no charges at present as the investigation continues.”
Smith’s attorney released a statement to Us Weekly confirming the musician was involved in a car accident, saying, “His heart goes out to Ms. Dobbins’ family during this incredibly difficult time. Mr. Smith continues to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation.”
Smith has yet to publicly address his legal issues. His most recent social media upload was posted one day before the accident. At the time, he shared a photo of himself performing, adding, “Hometown hits different.”
The incident occurred after CMA Fest — a four-day country music festival in Nashville. A Tennessee native, Smith signed to Big Machine Records and was nominated for New Male Artist of the Year at the 2024 ACM Awards after the success of hit songs including “Creek Will Rise” and “Learn From It.”
