For some people, a hotel may simply be a place to lay their head when travelling. For others, it’s one of the biggest reasons to book a trip in the first place.

If you fall into the latter camp, the Fodor’s Finest list of the most incredible hotels in the world in 2027 is for you.

This latest edition features 50 “extraordinary” properties that offer more than just a stunning room. Impeccable service, luxurious amenities, extravagance and a deep connection to the surroundings are what set these stays apart.

In Europe, 11 hotels made the cut, including the Grand Hotel Tremezzo in Lake Como, the Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo in Monaco, and the Orient Express La Minerva in Rome.

Housed in a 16th century building close to the gates of Edinburgh Castle, The Witchery was also included and offers guests an “immersive experience” with lavish rooms replete with Gothic interiors.

Opened in 2021, Acro Suites Crete combines luxury resort offerings with being a state-of-the-art wellness retreat. A night’s stay can be in a cave suite and by day, guests can take a dip in their private plunge pool.

Meanwhile, the five-star Charlotte Street Hotel in Fitzrovia, London, features rooms that each have a distinct design. It also has its own library, drawing room and screening room for film buffs.

Other European hotels on the list include Airelles La Bastide in Provence, Argos in Cappadocia, Hotel Pigalle in Gothenburg, Maison Souquet in Paris, and Pulitzer Amsterdam.

“An extraordinary hotel stay can mean something different to every traveller,” said Jeremy Tarr, Editorial Director at Fodor’s Travel. “It might be a remarkable sense of place, an unexpected level of personal service, or a setting that makes you see a destination in an entirely new way.

“By focusing on just 50 properties this year, we’re spotlighting the hotels that truly stand apart and give travellers a compelling reason to make the journey.”

How were the properties chosen?

Curated by Fodor’s editors in collaboration with hundreds of hospitality experts, the compilation features a range of stays from varying price points.

This includes properties that have a character-rich history, are design driven urban retreats to stays that are intimate hideaways. With only 50 places on this year’s list, “every selection has earned its place”, Fodor’s said.

Specifically in Europe, Fodor’s said the continent has been “perfecting the art of hospitality for centuries”, with its portfolio of finest hotels having the history, character and occasional eccentricity to prove it.

Beyond price tags and copious marbling, the publication said its European curation is united by “a sense of personality”. It added: “Whether extravagantly opulent or quietly understated, these are places with stories to tell – and plenty of reasons to become part of them.”
