Food influencer Emma Amit has reportedly died after eating a toxic crab.
Multiple outlets reported that Amit, 51, died in the hospital on February 6, two days after she filmed herself eating the toxic Zosimus aeneus crab, known as the “Devil Crab.”
She had posted the video of her eating the crab on social media on February 4. The clip showed Amit hunting the crab — and snails and shellfish — near her home in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, before cooking and eating one of them from the post.
Barangay Chief Laddy Gemang told Philippine news outlet ABS-CBN that she lost consciousness after eating the crab. Amit was then taken to the hospital. A friend of the content creator’s consumed the crab and also died.
The outlet also reported that officials visited Amit’s residence and found seven crab shells at the home. Gemang went on to warn residents about the crabs in the area.
“Be careful not to eat this devil crab because it is deadly,” he said, per ABS-CBN. “It is very dangerous to eat this type of crab because it can kill you in a matter of hours.”
The Zosimus aeneus crab, according to iNaturalist, is “potentially lethal due to the presence of the neurotoxins tetrodotoxin and saxitoxin in its flesh and shell.”
“Z. aeneus is considered the most poisonous crab in the Philippines, with 50% of intoxication cases being fatal,” iNaturalist wrote.
Gemang went on to explain that he was surprised by Amit’s death because she and her husband were both seasoned “fisherfolk.”
“This is really saddening because they should have known,” he said, per the New York Post. “They live by the sea, so I know they know about this devil crab that’s dangerous to eat. So why did she eat it? That is what I’m confused about.”
The outlet went on to report that Amit’s friend Beverly Villanueva called her death “shocking and sudden.”
“You were like an older sister,” she wrote, per the outlet. “I will miss you always. I know you didn’t want to leave yet because you still had so many plans in life, but why? That’s a question that will never be answered, because you’re gone.”
People reported that Amit posted videos of her and her husband fishing, as well as the pair cooking for their children.
Days after Amit’s death, news broke that influencer Chinnu Papu had died at age 24 after an apparent suicide. The content creator was found unresponsive by neighbors inside her rental home on Monday, February 9.
Multiple reports claimed that her death was confirmed as a suicide by a postmortem examination, with officials alleging there was no initial evidence of force or assault.
The creator is survived by her 4-year-old son, two brothers and her parents, who told Onmanorama that her death came nearly one month after her divorce from husband Prajula. The couple had been married for five years, with the family noting that the split impacted Papu.
“But she made a conscious effort not to show it outwardly,” her father told the outlet. “She would keep everything to herself and rarely shared her problems with us.”
Her brothers are reportedly asking officials to investigate her death. Her family reportedly said that she had last visited home on January 25, adding, “There was peace at home, and no problems were mentioned.”
