The glee club is staging a comeback.

Disney announced on Wednesday, October 21, that a Glee reboot is coming to Disney+ and Hulu. Cocreator Ryan Murphy is set to lead the project with the show’s original studio, 20th Television.

Details about the cast and plot have not yet been revealed.

“Currently gleeking out!” the official Instagram page for the musical comedy-drama wrote on Wednesday alongside a graphic featuring the show’s logo.

“It’s official. Glee is returning,” the image read.

Glee first aired on Fox for six seasons from 2009 to 2015. The show, cocreated by Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, followed members of the glee club at William McKinley High School in Lima, Ohio, and featured multiple musical numbers in every episode.

Television pioneer Ryan Murphy has been creating, writing, directing and producing Emmy-winning series for over two decades — and now has so many shows on the air that it feels like he’s everywhere. After cocreating the cult teen dramedy Popular in 1999, Murphy made his debut as a solo creator with the FX drama Nip/Tuck, […]

The original cast included Lea Michele, Dianna Agron, Amber Riley, Chris Colfer, Kevin McHale, Jenna Ushkowitz, Heather Morris, Matthew Morrison, Jane Lynch, Harry Shum Jr., Darren Criss and more.

Three of the show’s stars — Cory Monteith, Mark Salling and Naya Rivera — have died. Monteith died in 2013 at age 31 from an accidental drug and alcohol overdose, while Salling died by suicide at age 35 in 2018. Rivera died in an accidental drowning at age 33 in 2020 while saving her son’s life at Lake Piru, California.

Murphy, 60, has floated the possibility of a Glee reboot in recent months.

“I just finished the script an hour ago. We have a script. Brad and Ian and I, who wrote all the first two seasons, have written something,” the American Horror Story cocreator told Entertainment Tonight in September.

He continued, “I’ve been in touch with around 10 of the original cast members. It’s very sweet. They all had a lot of questions, but they were all enthusiastic about the idea. Nobody’s read it. I don’t know … we’ll see. I vowed to myself that I wanted to write a couple of them to see what people think, particularly the cast, because we were very close when we were making it.”

Christmas came early for U.K. based Gleeks over the weekend. Glee alums Chris Colfer and Darren Criss reunited, almost a decade after the hit Fox musical comedy-drama wrapped, for a London performance of “Baby It’s Cold Outside” on Sunday, October 18. “The only thing inappropriate about doing this song is doing it without me,” Colfer, […]

Meanwhile, in an August interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Murphy said he had long “considered” bringing the show back.

“It’s something to consider. For many, many people now in their 20s, they grew up on that show and it meant something to them,” he explained. “The music meant something. So, let’s kick it around and see what we get. It’s always about the story for me. What’s the story? Do I want to tell the story now? Sometimes I want to wait.”

Murphy added, “I’m considering a lot of stuff. To me, it’s always about how the scripts come in and what it costs. You have to be conscious about all of that. But because I have such great partners, I’m able to create things that give thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of people jobs.”

Michele, 40, who played Rachel Berry in the original series, recently hinted that she would be down to join the reboot if approached.

“I love Glee. I will always love Glee. I love Ryan Murphy,” she told E! News last month. “[The show] just holds such a special place in my heart for me. So, I will follow Ryan wherever he goes.”
