The University of Nebraska football organization took down its post trolling Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce‘s engagement after the team beat the University of Cincinnati.
According to USA Today, Nebraska’s X account posted a meme on Thursday, August 28, poking fun at Swift and Kelce’s internet-breaking engagement news. The post included an edited photo of Swift gazingly lovingly into mascot Herbie Husker’s eyes instead of Kelce.
“Change of plans,” the caption read, per a screenshot shared by the outlet.
After the post went live (following the Cornhuskers 20-17 win over the Bearcats), many fans of Swift and Kelce, both 35, and college football enthusiasts called out the school for taking it too far.
“The post by Nebraska football, which I’m not sharing, is disgusting. Taylor, whether you like her music or not, is a human being and deserves respect,” one user wrote via X on Friday, August 29. “That was gross to do to anyone.”
Another fan responded, “Wow, Nebraska. Such an inconsiderate post. Congrats on the win, but keep Taylor out of this you pieces of garbage!”
A spokesperson for the university’s athletic department confirmed the post was deleted in a statement to People. “The ill-advised post on the @Huskers X account last night resulted in very strong responses and comments that took the attention away from the game and our football team. We made the decision to remove the post and focus on our season opening victory in a great environment.”
Kelce and Swift were in attendance for the Thursday night game at Arrowhead Stadium. The couple were joined by Travis’ brother, Jason Kelce, for the occasion. Both Jason and Travis are alumni of the University of Cincinnati.
This was Swift and Travis’ first appearance together after announcing their engagement earlier this week.
“Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married,” the joint Instagram caption read.
Fans, celebrities and members of Swift and Travis’ inner circle expressed their excitement for the happy couple’s news. Jason, for his part, had a sweet message for the pair in the recent episode of his and Travis’ “New Heights” podcast.
“There is one gigantic piece of new news that just hit the waves,” Jason said in a solo intro video. “We did record this podcast on Monday, which was Travis’ one day off so he is not here to address this himself but we felt necessary here as a team on New Heights to get together and send Travis and Taylor a giant congratulations for being engaged. The proposal heard ‘round the world, f**k yeah.”
