Police in Pennsylvania have arrested a 22-year-old man who they claim raped a 95-year-old woman last spring.
The alleged rape that has landed John Vernon Gray behind bars happened back on May 10, 2025, in the town of Towamencin, according to a statement released by prosecutors.
It took authorities several months to link Gray to the rape. But he was finally arrested on Saturday, January 10, and charged with rape, attempted rape, sexual assault, burglary, and other crimes.
He has not entered pleas to the charges yet, Us Weekly has learned.
Investigators have further alleged that Gray victimized three other women during a violent crime spree that unfolded within the same town.
Authorities said that the first of Gray’s crimes — an attempted rape — happened on May 10 just before 2:30 a.m.
“A 79-year-old woman awoke to a man coming into her house on Dock Drive” in the Dock Woods neighborhood, through her bedroom window,” reads a statement from prosecutors. “She screamed and scared him off.”
An hour later, though, he found his way into a second home in Dock Woods where he raped the homeowner, who was 95.
A criminal complaint obtained by Us Weekly alleges that the victim was roused from sleep to see Gray standing in her bedroom. He said nothing, she said, so she asked him, “What do you want?” It is alleged in the complaint that Gray responded, “I want you” just before he committed the rape. He then left the woman’s residence.
Authorities said that the victim told police she believed that Gray had entered her home through the front door, which she had left unlocked.
Investigators claim that his next crimes came several months later, on November 8, 2025. That morning, Gray is alleged to have broken into two additional homes in Towamencin. A 72-year-old woman told police that she awoke around 3 a.m. to find a man in her bedroom. Gray attempted to lift up her nightgown but ran off when she started screaming, authorities alleged in the criminal complaint.
Not even half an hour later, police allege that Gray made his way into a nearby home by forcing open some rear sliding glass doors. Police said that he began touching a sleeping 46-year-old woman in a sexual manner before she woke up and fled, yelling for her husband’s help. Gray hightailed it from the home, according to police.
Detectives said in the criminal complaint that they were finally able to connect Gray to all four crimes by reviewing phone records and “conducting searches, and matching Gray to DNA collected from the crime scenes. Gray is being held at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility without bail.
He is due in court for a preliminary hearing in his case on February 2, 2026. He does not yet have an attorney who could address the allegations on his behalf.
Authorities said they are interested in speaking with anyone who believes they might have been one of Gray’s victims. Those individuals are being urged to contact Montgomery County Detectives at (610) 278-3385.
