San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Keion White sustained a bullet wound to his ankle early on Monday, February 9, just hours after Levi’s Stadium, his home field, hosted the 2026 Super Bowl.
White, 27, underwent successful surgery Monday afternoon and his injury is not considered career-threatening, the 49ers said in a statement later that day. The NFL star had been in attendance at Super Bowl LX prior to the incident.
“Keion White was a victim of a shooting and sustained a bullet wound to his ankle this morning in San Francisco,” the team statement read. “He is currently undergoing surgery at a local hospital. We will provide further updates when appropriate.”
A statement from the San Francisco Police Department revealed that the shooting happened during an argument.
“A preliminary investigation revealed a verbal altercation occurred between two groups inside a business,” the department said in a statement to ESPN. “The victim was injured when shots were fired by an unknown suspect.”
The SFPD said that it responded to a report of a shooting on the 1700 block of Mission Street in San Francisco at around 4:06 a.m. local time on Monday. Officers on the scene found one victim with a gunshot wound and were able to treat them before the victim was taken to the hospital with “non-life-threatening injuries.”
No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing. It is unknown if the event being held where the shooting occurred was related to the Super Bowl.
“Our officers are working diligently on this investigation,” department spokesperson Evan Sernoffsky told The Athletic in a story published Tuesday, February10. “We’re following multiple leads.”
Sernoffsky added that White is not believed to have been part of the two parties arguing that allegedly led to the shooting and that there were no other victims.
The night of the shooting, White shared photos from Levi’s Stadium via Instagram, showing him watching his former team, the New England Patriots, fall to the Seattle Seahawks.
The shooting also comes just 18 months after another 49ers player, wide receiver Ricky Pearsall, was shot in the chest during an attempted robbery in San Francisco. The bullet passed through him without hitting any vital organs, and Pearsall, 25, was able to play during the 2025 season after missing the first six games.
A 17-year-old man was arrested in connection with the shooting after he had also sustained a bullet wound to his arm. The individual was charged with attempted murder, second-degree robbery and assault with a semi-automatic firearm. He is currently awaiting trial in a juvenile court.
Speaking to the media in January 2025, Pearsall revealed he has forgiven his attacker.
“I don’t know how he grew up, so I can’t judge him as a man just based off one action that he made, as violent as a crime it was,” he said at the time. “God forbid him doing that to someone else. I don’t ever want that to happen.”
Pearsall added, “At some point, I do want to talk to the kid. If I can create an impact on him in any way, I think that would be really good and I’d be open to doing that for sure.”
